High visibility patrols and arresting key offenders are among the public’s priorities for North Yorkshire Police, according to a survey.

The force carried out a survey as part of a project to understand the demands on its neighbourhood policing teams. It received 5,500 responses.

Results revealed by North Yorkshire Police show that the public chose high visibility patrols, arresting offenders and tackling organised crime as its top three priorities.

Other areas included proactive plain clothed patrols, early intervention and crime prevention after burglaries.

Meanwhile, the survey results showed that attending community events, re-visits to victims of crime and keeping the force website up to date were lower down the list of priorities.

Catherine Clarke, assistant chief constable at North Yorkshire Police, said the survey results would help the force to shape its neighbourhood policing teams.

She said:

We are very grateful to the huge number of residents that took part in the survey. It has helped us to better understand what makes them feel safer in their communities, and we have absolutely taken that into account as we reshape our neighbourhood policing operations.

All the work we have done provides a great foundation of evidence to base our decisions on. We are adjusting the mix of PCSOs and police officers in line with the public’s prioritisation of the activities they most value our neighbourhood teams getting involved with. We will have 112 officers and 122 PCSOs by March 2026, that is an uplift of 32 officers and 20 PCSOs.

We are committed to our neighbourhood policing teams being more visible to the public. The assigned members of each team will be named and contactable via details published on our force website. There will be a 72-hour turnaround for any enquiries submitted to our neighbourhood teams.
