A Knaresborough community group has bought a house in the town for a family in need.
Knaresborough Community Land Trust (CLT) took on the empty three bedroomed terraced house to transform the space into a rented home for a local family.
The volunteer run group own the house after acquiring last year from North Yorkshire Council.
The house had been empty for 12 years and needs significant repairs, including a roof lift, heating, repairs to the front elevation as well as a new kitchen and bathroom.
The group has now launched a major fundraising exercise to raise £70,000 for essential repairs to get the house back into use.
Some of the £70,000 will come through grants and Knaresborough councillors Matt Walker and Hannah Gostlow have already provided £5,000 from their locality budgets.
Their fundraising campaign is now offering people the chance to sponsor a brick for £10 with the aim of raising £25,000.
The crowdfunder states that:
Each brick costs just £10 and you can sponsor as many as you like. Each sponsor will receive a certificate and have their name painted on a brick for posterity.
Knaresborough CLT house renovation
Once the house reaches a hospitable standard group members will decide who to rent the house to through an allocations policy, unconnected to North Yorkshire Council’s housing list and membership is open to anyone with links to Knaresborough.
According to the trust’s website:
The plan has never been to stop at one property but to grow a portfolio of low rent/ shared ownership properties in Knaresborough that means that having a home in Knaresborough is affordable for everyone in our community.
To return this house into use as a family home, we have a fundraising target of £70,000. Some of that will come through grants but we hope to raise £25,000 in sponsored bricks.
If we make more than we need, any extra funds will go back into the running of the CLT and maintenance of the house.
