There was no room for clerical errors when the Dean of Ripon the Very Revd John Dobson and his cathedral colleagues lined-up for the start of the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race today.

This morning's prelude to Lent and tomorrow's Ash Wednesday services across the city, was attended by hundreds of people who lined both sides of the Kirkgate cobbles.

In a test of hand and eye coordination, essential for a flat race like no other, the aim for competitors was to reach the finishing line with a well-tossed pancake still nestling in the pan.

One who certainly got the handle on it was the Venerable Clive Mansell (pictured above, left). In a burst of un-egg-spected speed for a 70-year-old, he was first past the pancake post in the clash of the clerics.

Under starter's orders for the children's pancake races.

The children's races were split into age categories and with parents and grandparents egging them on, the spectators were able to enjoy some cracking heats.

You can watch the fun in this video below.
