The Prince and Princess of Wales are among the many people around the country who have expressed their sadness today at the death of Harrogate teenager Liz Hatton.

Liz died yesterday morning, just 10 months after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

A talented photographer, she met the royal couple when she was given the opportunity to take photographs at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, the royal couple wrote:

We are so sorry to hear that Liz Hatton has sadly passed away. It was an honour to have met such a brave and humble young woman.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Liz’s parents Vicky and Aaron and her brother Mateo at this unimaginably difficult time.

Also on X, Chris Ship, ITV’s royal correspondent who met her at the investiture, posted:

What a brave, courageous and beautiful person #lizhatton was. Taken so young.

We were so glad to have been able to take Liz and family around our studios so she could explore her passion for photography.

Her family are equally as brave to have faced her diagnosis with such courage and hope. We send them our love and deepest sympathies.

News of her death was broadcast across the country this morning, with lengthy items on BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Speaking to Nick Robinson on Today, Louise Soanes, chief nurse at the Teenage Cancer Trust, said:

Liz telling her story so eloquently and with such passion and positivity is a great help.

Seven young people are diagnosed with cancer every day – about 2,500 a year – so she was one of a wider community, and I think someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, and speaks about how they’re coping and what they’re doing with their lives, and about their family and others around them, is always inspirational, and always a support, because teenagers and young adults listen to teenagers and young adults over everybody else.

So yes, without a doubt, she leaves a huge legacy.
