A special constable needed four stitches to a head wound after being attacked at yesterday's Great Knaresborough Bed Race.
North Yorkshire Police said today (June 9) that the volunteer police officer was assaulted at about 4.30pm outside the town’s So! Bar and bus station.
Inspector Holly Nicholls said it was an isolated incident in an event attended by about 30,000 people.
She added:
However, having attended the scene, I know that this was an upsetting experience for those that witnessed it. I would like to send my personal thanks to those members of the public that came forward to support our investigation and also for the kind words shared with my officers on the ground.
Insp Nicholls added a person was arrested at the scene and later charged with assaulting an emergency worker.
She said:
I am sure you can appreciate how deeply it is felt within the policing family when a member of our team is injured, however the impact is somewhat deeper when someone is hurt who volunteers to do this job for free.
I take any assault very seriously and this outcome is really positive for the victim and the robust approach my team will take to bring this kind of offending to justice.
I am pleased to report that after a trip to hospital, the officer is recovering well at home having had four stitches administered to a head wound.
Insp Nicholls, from the Harrogate outer neighbourhood team, said it was an otherwise “amazing” event organised by Knaresborough Lions.
She added:
I would like to finish by thanking everyone for contributing to a wonderful day and to reassure our community that this was an isolated incident with no further reports during the evening.
