    Work to begin on 390-home development in Ripon next week

    Work is set to begin on a 390-home development in Ripon next week.

    The scheme, which the developer Taylor Wimpey is constructing in partnership with government housing agency Homes England, will be built on land around West Lane, near Quarry Moor.

    A letter to residents from the two organisations, seen by the Stray Ferret, said next week's work will involve “amending the location of hedgerows along the site boundary”.

    Contractors will begin work on Monday and be on site for about four to six weeks.

    The letter added:

    “Works will be carried out between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
    “The works will involve partial road closure of West Lane, to ensure the safety of residents and the contractors, and may also incur some noise disruption during this period.”


    A Taylor Wimpey spokesperson told the Stray Ferret:

    "We will soon be commencing work on a new development of 390 one to four-bedroom homes on land off West Lane, Ripon.
    "In line with our ecological approach and the character of the local area, we will incorporate green open spaces and landscaping features, including planting of native trees and wildflower meadows.
    "West Lane, Ripon will also be home to the first beehive to be installed in this region, as well as a number of bird boxes, bat boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog highways.”


    Plans for the project were initially rejected by the former Harrogate Borough Council in 2017.

    However, the decision was overturned by the government’s Planning Inspectorate and a reserved matters application was eventually approved by North Yorkshire Council in October 2023.

    The development will include 156 affordable homes, cycling and walking links, a new bus route and two children’s play areas.

    Taylor Wimpey told the Stray Ferret the formal site work is expected to begin next month.
