'Many first-time customers from Harrogate are surprised when they walk through our doors'

Olly Smith, the fifth-generation head of renowned family-owned Harrogate furniture store, Smiths Of Harrogate, says that although his company is one of Harrogate’s few remaining 100-year-plus established, family-owned businesses, "there are still local people who don’t really know much about us and we regularly hear new customers saying 'we wish we had found you before now'".

Smiths of Harrogate was established in the town in 1906 by Olly Smith’s great-great-grandfather, Frederick Smith, and after over a century of trading in the town, Smiths has built up an enviable reputation as a destination furniture store.

The company still operates from the same Dragon Road premises it has occupied since the 1930s, when it took over a former rollerskating rink.

For decades, the business was called Smiths The Rink, but when Olly took the reins a couple of years ago, he decided the time had come to change the name to Smiths of Harrogate, a name that better reflected the changes that have been made whilst retaining its traditional values, and to say 'this is what we do now'

Olly said:

For many years we were always very well known for antiques, but due to a steady downturn in that market over the last 15 years, antiques are something we no longer sell. But now thanks to a rebrand, a change in direction, a new approach to marketing and a great website, 2024 has been a record year for us.

We now focus on beautiful furniture from the UK, Germany and Denmark, our choice of sofas is huge, and our vast bed department is really quite special with over 70 luxury beds on display from manufacturers including Harrison-Spinks, Hypnos, Tempur and Vispring.

The company has a large range of beds on display

In fact, Smiths of Harrogate is deceptively large, with two floors and 30,000 sq ft of retail space including the largest display of German sofa brand, Himolla, more than 60 sofas, and a full range from Ercol furniture, alongside a large carpet and flooring department.

The store on Dragon Road is open every day, has ample parking, and offers free delivery on most orders and serves most areas across the UK.

Olly said:

We provide traditional service with a modern approach.

A warm welcome awaits – and we have a coffee lounge where customers can relax and be inspired by what Smiths has to offer.
