A spectacular display of sixty one veteran cars in Harrogate town centre attracted big crowds today. The early cars are taking part in the Yorkshire Mid-Summer Veteran Car Run over the weekend.

The veteran car owners, who have based their rally at the Ripon Inn, spent the day displaying their 'horseless carriages' as they were known, to the delight of a large number of visitors who had come especially to see them.

Many of the owners were dressed in Edwardian attire, embodying the era of their pre-1914 cars. Some of the rally entrants have travelled from as far a field as Turkey and North America to attend the event.

Tomorrow, the veteran cars will set off to the Dales.

It's a long time since I've seen this many old cars in Harrogate.

John English, a visitor from Knaresborough, said:

It's so nice for Harrogate to have an event like this. I just can't believe they have managed to park them on the hill!

Mrs Barker, a visitor from Bradford, said:

It's a brilliant event, especially when the sun is out.

At the other end of motoring history was a collection of supercars, stationed on a red carpet outside the Yorkshire Hotel. The modern luxury cars had been organised by Apollo Capital, Harrogate-based luxury car financier.  These too attracted big crowds.

The organisers (and those braving the early open cars) were blessed with rare good weather. They hope to build on today's success and make it an annual event.
