The Stray Ferret will be covering more sport across the Harrogate district with the launch of a new sport section on the website and app and a new reporter.

Robert Caulfield joined the team in January and has already begun to cover more sports stories.

There is a remarkable number of high-level sports clubs in Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and the surrounding areas, which we believe need more coverage.

Football, rugby, cricket and hockey are among the most popular sports in the district, but there are many more teams and individuals with stories to be told.

We want to dig deeper into the various clubs around the district, to uncover the remarkable people within them who are often overlooked.

Our sport section will therefore focus on people features – interviews with players, managers and the individuals who help run the clubs, often on a voluntary basis.

The owner of the Stray Ferret, Tamsin O'Brien, said:

We recently recruited a young journalist to begin to cover sport more comprehensively. We think there are many sports in the area that would welcome the coverage and have great stories to tell.

Our newest journalist, Robbie Caulfield, is a lover of sport and will be the main driving force behind the section.

Robbie is a graduate of Newcastle University with a Master of Arts in Media and Journalism in December.

A big follower of football, Robbie has also had plenty of exposure to golf, cycling, cricket and rugby in his time, along with athletics.

Robert commented:

I'm really excited about the opportunity.

I've loved sport since I was a young boy, so to be able to spend my time covering the various clubs around the district is something I am really passionate about doing.

I've already made a few acquaintances from various local sports teams, and I look forward to meeting many more people and telling their stories!

We are not limiting ourselves to just people stories, though. As part of our extensive coverage of some of the district’s best teams, we will report on finances, facilities and any other miscellaneous stories that allow us to provide a thorough service for the clubs and their supporters.

Match reports will be covered for notable events such as cup finals and relegation battles. Whilst we want to provide extensive coverage of the top teams in the area, we also do not want to exclude other remarkable people across the district that compete individually or at a lower level.

If you have a story that you think may be of interest, please do not hesitate to contact Robert on robert@thestrayferret.co.uk or call us on 01423 276197.
