Boroughbridge residents have expressed dismay after their local Appleton’s Butchers stopped selling Scotch eggs.
Appleton's is one of the best known local butchers, with shops in Ripon, Knaresborough and Wetherby as well as Boroughbridge. It was founded in Ripon in 1867.
Its Scotch eggs have acquired something of a reputation: the hard-boiled eggs are wrapped in sausage meat and coated in breadcrumbs, then deep-fried until crispy.
However, the pungent aroma associated with deep frying proved not to be to everyone's liking.
A thread on Facebook group Boroughbridge Chatter revealed the company had removed Scotch eggs from its product range after a complaint about the smell.
One poster summed up the mood when he said:
Devastated by the news that Appleton's butchers can no longer sale their wonderful Scotch eggs. This is worst than us pensioners will no longer receive the winter fuel payments. RIP Scotch eggs.
Others shared the pain, with comments including 'Scotch Eggs are innocent, bring them back', 'What?! Nooooo... bring back the Scotch eggs' and 'OMG, the worse news ever. What now, what are we going to have for tea?'.
Scotch eggs by Appleton's
The Stray Ferret reached out to Appleton’s Butchers, which confirmed the news. It said in a statement:
It’s a real yolk that we can’t currently offer our renowned Scotch eggs in Boroughbridge. Balancing the needs of our neighbours and the council's planning regulations for deep frying has made it unviable at the moment. We refuse to scramble the quality of our product by cooking them any other way.
In the meantime, we’re still serving up our daily freshly baked delights, and we’ll be cooking up ideas on how we can occasionally treat the fine people of Boroughbridge to the Scotch eggs they deserve.
Appleton's stressed that its Scotch eggs will still be available from its online store and from its shops in Ripon, Knaresborough and Wetherby.
