A Harrogate charity which provides opportunities for adults with learning difficulties has launched an appeal to raise more than £7,000 to replace old and broken equipment.
Artizan Café, which opened on Cambridge Road in Harrogate in 2022, offers training, work experience, day services and employment for adults with learning disabilities who are often not in education, employment or training.
The training offered involves a range of skills necessary to run a cafe, such as food preparation, customer service and food hygiene.
The charity hopes to raise £7,283 to buy an automatic door to improve the accessibility of the café for wheelchair users (£5,838), an ice machine to train disabled adults to make iced coffees and smoothies (£800), and a display chiller for food and drink, to replace a broken one (£1,400).
Liz Cluderay, Artizan International UK Director, said:
Using our own industry-focused training pathways, we are providing a vocational training programme unlike anything seen before, providing an end-to-end solution that truly enables learning-disabled adults to attain their dream of paid employment with local employers and a life that is more independent and full of purpose.
The progress we have seen is to be celebrated. Parents and carers are telling us that they haven't seen change like it before in their young people. All allowing them to feel part of a team and grow in strength and confidence.
However, we are desperately in need of additional equipment and funding to enable us to expand both the services and the accessibility to the café, so have launched a crowdfunding appeal to help raise the money needed.
One staff member with learning disabilities will be moving into their own flat thanks to the café’s support. Their parent said:
No one has believed in them like this before, given them an opportunity to succeed rather than just activities to keep them busy.
The café is owned by Artizan International, an organisation that also operates a retail outlet around the corner on Oxford Street.
