The Harrogate founder of a loungewear brand aimed at pregnant women and mums has won silver in a national awards scheme.

Sophie Baldwin, who set up The Mum Collective earlier this year, was runner-up for the title of young business woman of the year at the National Business Women’s Awards in London.

She set up her business to offer the luxury yet comfortable clothing she felt was missing from her wardrobe while she was pregnant and breastfeeding.

Sophie said:

“To be awarded silver at such a high level is incredible.

“Having met some amazing female owned and led businesses at the awards night, it’s safe to say the community of women who are taking the business world by storm is a powerful one.”

New owner for holiday park near Harrogate

A holiday park near Harrogate has changed hands for an undisclosed sum.

Cardale Estate, on the edge of Beckwithshaw, has been bought by Cardale Escapes, owned by John Brooksbank.

The park has 50 static caravans, with a licence for a further 27, and a four-bedroom detached home within its 85 acres of woodland. It had been listed for sale at £3.75m.

Mr Brooksbank was advised by a team from law firm Gordons, led by commercial real estate partner Joanne Fearnley. She said:

“Cardale Escapes has exciting plans for the holiday park and being so close to Harrogate offers residents the best of both town and country.”

Mr Brooksbank added:

“Cardale Estate is a premium holiday park with huge potential in beautiful rural surroundings just three miles from the centre of Harrogate.

“Joanne and her team at Gordons were instrumental in enabling this complex deal to complete with practical and effective advice.”

The Harrogate founder of a not-for-profit organisation has received a national award for his work.

John Longden OBE, chief executive of Pub is the Hub, was given the Industry Champion Award by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) at its annual dinner.

It was presented in recognition of his work to help pubs diversify and support local communities by providing essential local services.

So far, the organisation has helped more than 600 pubs to diversify, with almost 200 of those receiving help from its community services fund. Diversification can provide village shops, community cafes and libraries, as well as allotments and even cinemas.

Receiving his award, Mr Longden said:

“You have no idea how special this is. This is also for the family of Pub is The Hub and to our family of supporters.

“We all enjoy collaborating and helping publicans in their local areas. For every £1 invested in a shop, community café, village garden or play area it creates between £8 to £9 of social value. It is the social value that helps to bind us together in this wonderful industry.”

“We believe we can inspire 1,000 projects over the next three years and we have over 50 expressions of interest at this time.”

Emma McClarkin OBE, chief executive of the BBPA, added:

“This time last year we hoped we were done with ‘unprecedented times’ but here we are again after another year of surprises, challenges, and once-in-a-lifetime events.

“And throughout all of it our pubs and brewers have remained at the heart of villages, towns, and cities across the countries, providing a place of solace and community for so many and it’s why I am really proud to stand here tonight representing our brilliant industry.”

Early festive plans as Ripon businesses join forces

A group of Ripon independent retailers are joining forces later this month to take part in a special Christmas event, where a gift hamper worth more than £100 will be won by a lucky shopper.

The businesses – seven of them on North Street and one on Fishergate – will be open from 10am until 8pm on Thursday November 17.

There will be discounts at selected stores and shoppers are invited to enjoy a glass of fizz and a festive treat while they browse the goods and services on offer.

Newcastle novelist Mick Herron has won the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2022, presented by Harrogate International Festivals, for his crime novel Slough House.

The announcement was made at The Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate last night during the opening ceremony of the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, which runs until Sunday.

The book, which is the seventh installment in the bestselling series of the same name, follows a band of failed spies.

This year marks Herron’s first time winning the award after five appearances on the shortlist in just six years.

The author received a £3,000 prize, as well as a handmade, engraved beer barrel provided by T&R Theakston Ltd.

A new craft and haberdashery shop is opening this Saturday in Masham.  

Through the Looking Glass, Each One Unique will open at 10am, with an Alice in Wonderland themed celebration, hoping to attract the attention of local shoppers.

The Queen of Hearts will be there to cut the ribbon, along with Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the caterpillar and Tweedledum and Tweedledee.  

Manager Emily Swift said:  

“I’m really looking forward to the new adventure and being a part of Masham community, although I am really nervous as well. 

“I hope the people of Masham will welcome us in with open arms and embrace us”.  

Through the Looking Glass was previously a women’s clothing shop that had been open for 40 years, and was forced to close during the pandemic. Ms Swift said she opted to keep the original name of the store, but wanted to take the shop in a new direction.  

She added that crafting has become more popular amongst teenagers recently, particularly during lockdown when lots of people took up the hobby.  

Often labelled the ‘crazy crochet lady’ by her friends, Ms Swift’s father taught her to crochet 13 years ago. Now, she is hoping more people will get involved and commented that crafting is “not just a female hobby”.  

Local solicitors shortlisted for legal firm award

Harrogate based solicitors Raworths LLP, has been shortlisted for an award that celebrates the achievements of law firms internationally.  

The trusts, wills and estates team are up for the ‘out of London practice of the year’ award, along with four other firms across the country.   

Head of trusts, wills and estates Rachel Tunnicliffe said:  

“This shortlist is particularly gratifying as, unlike a lot of awards, it isn’t something for which you nominate yourself.  

“This is testimony to the great team we have built, who are doing exciting work for top quality clients.” 

She added the team at Raworths are feeling confident about the award, but understand there will be stiff competition.  

The winners will be announced on 21st July at the Chambers event in London.

Harrogate Wedding & Events have been awarded the Regional Wedding Award for the Décor category.

Its partner business, DJMikeRobson, won the Regional Wedding Award for the DJ category.

The business, which provides wedding services in Harrogate, won the award for within the Yorkshire and North East region.

It was presented by the Wedding Industry Awards for the year 2022.

The awards bring together businesses in the wedding industry from across the UK and are held every year in London.

Ina Robson, owner of Harrogate Wedding & Events, said:

“We are delighted to receive the award and pride ourselves on excellent customer service. To know this award is also driven from customer feedback, means a lot to us.

“The industry itself has had a very difficult few years, but we are now looking forward to a bright future.

New managing director appointed at Ripon BID 

Lindsay Elizabeth Mcphearson Austin has been appointed as managing director at Ripon BID.

News of the appointment was recently published on Companies House.

The appointment replaces former directors Sheila Webb and Sarah Blenkinsop.

There are currently twelve active directors as a part of the Ripon BID.

BIDs, which are funded by a levy on local firms,  aim to increase visitor numbers to towns and cities.

Real Food Harrogate asks for local food producers to join market

Real Food Harrogate market, Crescent Gardens

Real Food Markets is looking for independent food producers to join its Harrogate market.

The not-for-profit organisation operates in both Harrogate and Ilkley and supports local, independent and speciality producers.

Real Food Harrogate is run by a selection of traders and volunteers on Crescent Gardens on the third Sunday of each month from 10-3pm.

Set up in 2022 with the support of Harrogate BID and Harrogate Council, the market has gradually expanded in size.

Now, organisers are looking for local food producers to take part in Real Food Harrogate.

Powerchair football star Ellie Renton, has won a Northern Children of Courage award for her achievements in the fast-paced sport.

The 11-year-old Ripon Grammar School student, whose rare genetic condition means she is unable to walk, was also praised for being a brilliant role model at an awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead.

Powerchair football allows people with physical disabilities to play football. Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club first team winger Ellie, from Kirkby Malzeard, is one of the youngest players competing in the national league.

She was diagnosed at 18 months old with type two spinal muscular atrophy, a slow progressive muscle wasting condition which has left her with weak arms and legs and prone to potentially life-threatening chest infections and pneumonia.

The awards, organised by The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation, celebrate the achievements of young people who have overcome barriers, achieved something extraordinary or helped and supported others.

Coach Carolyn Bean, who nominated Ellie, praised her achievements:

She said:

“She has worked her way up through the teams and has improved so much. She is a joy to coach, listens and tries her hardest absolutely all the time.

“Ellie often comes to training early to help out during our lower-level training, at such a young age I find this pretty amazing. She has such a natural understanding of what other players need and is already a brilliant role model, even to those older than her.

“Ellie holds her own during matches, playing against other teams with players of all ages, which can sometimes be quite scary.”

The year seven pupil, who plans to study marine biology at university, said the award came as a huge surprise as she didn’t know she had been nominated. She said:

“I feel grateful, happy and honoured, when I play powerchair football it feels normal, like a normal sport as this is something I can do with my abilities.”

Her mother, Yvonne, added:

“When Ellie was five and first got into a powerchair for football, we were told she would go far. Within two to three years, she had achieved national status, the youngest player to reach that level in the UK.”

Ellie also enjoys music, art, science and maths.

“We would like to thank her coach who nominated her without us knowing – it was a huge surprise when we heard Ellie had won. We are extremely happy and over the moon for her, to receive such an award and to be recognised for her abilities in powerchair football.”
