A Harrogate businesswoman has won a lifetime achievement award.
Sue Cawthray, who is chief executive of Harrogate Neighbours, was praised for her service to care catering at the Public Sector Catering Awards 2023.
The ceremony, which was held at the London Hilton Metropole on April 13, saw Ms Cawthray given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards celebrate the best catering operators working across schools, hospitals, care homes, universities, prisons, catering colleges and the military.
Ms Cawthray said:
“I am absolutely shocked and did not expect it.
“I am just so grateful that I have been given the opportunity to do the job I do every day. I believe at Harrogate Neighbours we make a difference to people’s lives every day.”
She added:
“I have the most amazing team at Harrogate Neighbours who are dedicated and hardworking.
“I am just so grateful for the work they put in as well as their dedication and commitment because we do it together.”
Knaresborough not-for-profit exceeds numeracy scheme targets
A Knaresborough not-for-profit organisation has celebrated reaching its annual target for a numeracy scheme.
Better Connect launched its Multiply programme as part of a government initiative to improve maths skills for people from all backgrounds.
The scheme is scheduled to run for three years.
The organisation has gone on to exceed its targets for the first year of the scheme and have helped over 450 adults across eight districts in North Yorkshire, as well as engaging over 250 local employers to get involved.
Emma Lyons, Multiply programme manager at Better Connect, said:
“We’ve just completed year one, and we’ve absolutely smashed it. There’s been such great provision by such great partners, and we are really excited to move the programme forward on to year two.
“We’ve got even bigger and even better, so watch this space.”

Business Breakfast: Bettys of Harrogate wins national retailer award
The Stray Ferret Business Awards will be held on March 9 at the Pavilions of Harrogate. The event will be a celebratory night with prize draw and afterparty.
Richard Flinton, the chief executive of the new North Yorkshire Council is the guest speaker. Early bird ticket prices are available until February 9 and available to buy here. Bring your team, network and have fun.
Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate has been named specialist retailer of the year at the Food and Travel Reader Awards.
The awards, which were founded in 2012, were held at the Royal Automobile Club in London’s Pall Mall.
Bettys was nominated in the category alongside Berry Bros & Rudd, Cheeses of Muswell Hill, HG Walter, Cockburns of Leith and The Umbrella Project.

Last call for EU funded workplace support scheme

A Knaresborough non-profit has made a final call for small businesses to take advantage of a workplace support scheme.
The Thriving at Work programme is led by Better Connect and aims to help firms create an inclusive workplace, in particular for staff who are neurodiverse, disabled, or experiencing mental health challenges.
The support, which is EU funded, is aimed at businesses across the Harrogate district and North Yorkshire.
The programme includes:
- Inclusive workplace support: one-to-one business support to help create an inclusive workplace, covering policies and procedures, recruitment, culture and values, staff training, quality marks and more.
- Diversity training: webinars and training courses relevant to creating inclusive workplaces.
- Workplace support: one-to-one coaching and support for employees who identify as neurodiverse, disabled, or experienced mental health challenges.
Mike Sweeting, human resources officer at Aldwark Manor which undertook the scheme, said:
“We’re very much on a journey of development, looking specifically at retaining our team, attracting the best new talent into the business, and ensuring we cultivate a great working environment where we show commitment to the development of our team.”
As the UK is no longer a member of the European Union, businesses must sign up by March 31, to take advantage of Thriving at Work’s fully funded inclusive workplace support, which will be delivered by June 30, 2023.

Yorkshire-based non-profit, Better Connect hosted an event in Harrogate to celebrate the success of its Action Towards Inclusion project.
ATI is an employability programme aimed at supporting those who are furthest from the labour market.
It has provided specialist support to help individuals across Yorkshire to overcome significant barriers, begin training, start the job search and secure employment. The project has helped over 3,000 people transform their lives, and secure training and employment.
A total of 180 people from across the Yorkshire region gathered at the Majestic Hotel to honour the contributions of participants and the programme’s leaders, and celebrate the significant impact ATI has made.
Natasha Babar-Evans, chief executive at Better Connect said:
“This programme has made such a huge impact, and it was both emotional and encouraging to hear some of the incredible stories, the amazing journeys that people have made, the progress they’ve made, what they’ve achieved, and how important this programme has been to them.”

Care award for Vida employee

A specialist care worker at Harrogate based Vida Healthcare, has won the Dementia Care Leader award at the Social Care Leadership Awards 2022.
Bernadette Mossman, Vida’s healthcare director, won for her outstanding contribution to health and social care, particularly in relation to the care of people living with dementia.
The Social Care Leadership Awards provide an opportunity to showcase excellence in senior leadership in the sector.
Vida operates three care homes which provide care for over 210 people living with dementia, with over 450 staff currently employed across a number of roles.
Commenting on her win, Ms Mossman said:
“Since starting my career in health and social care, I’ve met so many amazing people and have achieved things that I’m extremely proud of. This award win is one such achievement.
“Being recognised by my peers and receiving this award means a lot to me, and I’m touched that my passion and dedication to supporting people living with dementia and our colleagues has been recognised.”
