Two new classrooms are to be built at Boroughbridge Primary School and its existing Horsa hut will be demolished.
North Yorkshire Council has awarded a £805,870 contract to Pontefract firm R H Fullwood Ltd to carry out the work.
This project will be funded by section 106 funding paid by developers to the council to compensate for the impact of new homes on local infrastructure.
The classrooms are expected to be ready for the new academic year, September 2024.

This led to talks about the current building, which is situated alongside the KS1 playground and separate to the main school building, being replaced.
Emma Ryan, headteacher of Boroughbridge primary school said:
“This is an extremely exciting time to be at Boroughbridge Primary School.
“The school has grown considerably over the last few years, mainly due to the new housing developments, and I am positive that pupil numbers will continue to increase. It is great that the local authority have recognised the need for extra classrooms as this will allow us to accommodate our pupils.”

A school spokesperson added:
“It was clear that the new housing estates and general growth of Boroughbridge was going to impact the school with a rise in pupil numbers. Over the last year, this has been very evident due to all our new families and pupils.
“This Horsa hut has been part of our school for a long time but is now not fit for current educational needs and for the quality of teaching that we uphold. As a result, it will need to be demolished.”

Boroughbridge Primary School celebrates 90th birthday
Boroughbridge Primary School has celebrated its 90th birthday with fun activities and a look back at history.
Years 1 and 2 learned about play time games from the past, such as hopscotch, drop the handkerchief and catch the flag.
Year 2 children looked at photographs of the past and went to see where they thought they were taken from and watched a film from 1933, Alice in Wonderland, and compared it to modern films.
Key stage 2 children took part in three different sessions: playground games from the 1930s, a music quiz to see how music has changed in the last 90 years and a history session exploring the old school logbooks, photographs and newspaper clippings.
Friends of Boroughbridge School organised tea, cake, hot dogs and an inflatable.
Former headteacher Mr Roberts, who was in charge when many parents were pupils, also attended and said he was delighted with how well the school is flourishing.
Year 5 teacher Ms Frampton was able to provide many historical photographs and school logbooks from past years.
Headteacher Emma Ryan said:
“The event was the perfect opportunity to involve the children within their history lessons and learn about our school and how much it has changed over the years.
“It was an absolute delight to welcome all our families into school to celebrate its 90th birthday.”

Boroughbridge all set for late-night Christmas shopping tonight
Festive spirit will be flowing in Boroughbridge tonight as the town hosts its annual late-night shopping, Christmas tree lights switch-on and a visit from Santa.
The event, organised Boroughbridge and District Chamber of Trade, will see shops stay open until 8pm.
The night will begin with the official Christmas tree lights switch-on in Hall Square at 5.30pm, followed by carols from three school choirs — Boroughbridge Primary and High School and Roecliffe Primary.
Boroughbridge Lions will host Santa and his sleigh and there will be community stalls, children’s rides and a donkey and miniature horse.

Festive food and drink will include the Scouts’ roast chestnuts and Brighter Boroughbridge’s mulled wine and mince pies stall. There will also be a hog roast.
The shop window display competition theme this year is A Christmas Panto, with entries to be judged tonight,
The lights on the Christmas tree will be switched on by BBC Radio York’s Georgey Spanswick and the Mayor, Sean Hynes.

‘Good’ rating from Ofsted for Boroughbridge school“Anyone coming along will find the town buzzing.
“There will be lots of great independent shops to browse and buy Christmas gifts from.
“Santa and his sleigh, along with the kids’ rides, will be big attractions to the younger generation. But wrap up warm!”
Ofsted has praised Boroughbridge Primary School for the way it engages pupils with their learning as it awarded it a ‘good’ rating.
A two-day inspection in May found children were well-behaved and polite, showing “positive and attentive” attitudes.
In their report, the inspector said:
“Boroughbridge Primary School is a friendly and welcoming place. Pupils feel safe, happy and enjoy their learning.
“Relationships are a strength of the school. As one pupil put it, ‘We have kind teachers, kind children and lovely school cooks!’
“Pupils work hard to meet their teachers’ high expectations and do well.”
The inspector found teachers consistently checked pupils’ knowledge and what they could remember in lessons. However, she said more could be done to carry out assessments over time to look for and address gaps in knowledge.
She also found that teachers were not always clear on what pupils should know in each subject area, but said school leaders were already working towards addressing this.

The report said the school had had a change of leadership recently, with an interim headteacher and deputy head appointed. The inspector added:
“Leaders have brought about many positive changes to the school in a short space of time. They are developing a broad and ambitious curriculum.
“Staff are well supported by school leaders and governors. Staff value this. They know that they can ask for help, particularly with workload. Staff appreciate the care and consideration given to their well-being.
“There is a positive culture of teamwork between leaders, staff and governors.”
Boroughbridge Primary School has 175 pupils aged between three and 11. Its previous inspections in 2017 and 2013 both also gave a ‘good’ rating.
