A Harrogate marketing agency has made four new appointments after a period of growth.

Extreme, which is based at Windsor House, said it has seen an increase in enquiries from companies despite the tough economic climate.

The firm has appointed account manager Eliza Carroll and delivery executive Josh Parker to its client services team, while Rob Curtis joins as a senior digital designer and Rebecca Bailey as PPC executive.

Black Sheep wins at international beer awards

Black Sheep Brewery won five awards at this year’s International Beer Challenge.

The Masham-based brewery saw its Cry Wolf IPA win a gold award in the IPA category and its Black Sheep Ale pick up silver in the British Style Pale Ales & Bitters (4.1-5%) category.

Meanwhile, the brewery saw its 54 Yorkshire lager, Milk Stout and its IPA Interrobang all win bronze.

The company said on its website:

“We’re over the moon with these awards, and along with other awards in the bag this year, it’s safe to say we’ve had a great 30th year.”

The International Beer Challenge is held annually and aim to “reward and promote excellent beers from around the globe”.

IDHL Group, which is based on Otley Road and specialises in e-commerce, digital PR and social media, has appointed Tom Rigden to the newly created role at the company.

Harrogate business event to focus on hospitality support

Support for the hospitality sector in Harrogate will be discussed at a business event this week.

Organised by Philip Bolson of Mr B Hospitality in partnership with York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub, the event will hear from experts and politicians on how the industry can grow in the coming years.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones and Helen Suckling, partnership and commercial manager at Destination Harrogate, will be among the speakers.

Mr Bolson will also address the discussion, as well as Danny Wild, principal of Harrogate College, and Ross Tatham, general manager of Goldsborough Hall.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to network and develop contacts.

Business Breakfast: NYnet to create district’s biggest full fibre business park

County council-owned technology firm NYnet has announced that Hornbeam Park is set to become the district’s biggest full fibre business park.

The expansion aims to support the local economy with reliable fibre broadband and guaranteed bandwidth.

The company already delivers full fibre to Saint Michael’s Hospice, which is located at the end of the business park.

The project is supported by the Digital Enterprise Grant which plans to match investments made by businesses at the park.

The CEO of Nynet, Alastair Taylor, said:

“The expansion of our network at Hornbeam Park will mean every business on the site can have access to fast and reliable fibre to the premises, at a price not dissimilar to current non-fibre services.

“The investment we are putting into Hornbeam Park and the service levels businesses will be able to access is excellent news for our region and will help to put Harrogate at the forefront of the UK’s digital economy.”

Nynet Limited was established by the North Yorkshire County Council in 2007. All profits from the company are returned to the council to fund frontline services.

Free breakfast seminars to review agricultural prospects coming to Harrogate

Rural land surveying firm GSC Grays will be hosting a free breakfast seminar to aid farmers this December.

The seminar will take place on December 6 at Pavillions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

The company will be reviewing the prospects and options for farmers in the area, as well as advising them.

GSC Grays will give advice and support the agricultural industry in the free seminar 

The session comes at a time of need for farmers with basic payment scheme payments ending and inflation rising.

The Harrogate seminar is one of four scheduled across the North of England as part of GSC Grays’ farm business advice service.

The service has been funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under the Future Farming Resilience Fund Scale Up Project. This gives organisations like GSC Grays grants allowing them to offer free business advice.

A Harrogate home care company has picked up an award at a regional ceremony.

Continued Care saw seven members of staff make finalists for the Great British Care Awards, with Christine Middleton winning the Dignity in Care award.

The awards took place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on November 11. Staff members from the Ripon and Harrogate offices were present.

Samantha Harrison, Continued Care director, said: 

“Christine is a worthy winner of this award. She is exceptionally kind and person-centred and has worked in care for a long time. We are so proud of her and of all our staff who were nominated, they are all winners in my eyes because they were put forward by the people they care for and work with.”

Transport for the North appoint new directors

Transport for the North has appointed two new directors to its finance and strategy departments.

The organisation, which helps with transport improvements across the North of England, announced the new appointments this week.

Interim finance director Paul Kelly has been promoted to finance director. He joined TfN from Transport for Greater Manchester in 2018 where he was head of financial and commercial for Metrolink.

Mr Kelly said: 

“It is an honour to be appointed to this position and to have the opportunity to support Transport for the North as it transitions to a new structure and further embed its role for the North.”

Meanwhile, the new strategy, policy and communications director has been named as Katie Day. Katie’s last role was as director of policy and communications at the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

Harrogate Bus Company to mark remembrance

Harrogate Bus Company has announced that its buses will adorn commemorative poppies to mark this year’s Remembrance Day.

The poppies will be prominently displayed on the front of buses on routes covering hundreds of miles every day across the Harrogate district and into West Yorkshire.

Harrogate law firm founder to retire

The founder of Harrogate law firm Jones Myers is set to retire after a 42-year career.

Peter Jones founded the company back in 1992 as the sole practitioner specialising in marital difficulties.

He soon attracted fellow family lawyers, who shared his ethos in resolving relationship breakdowns in a non-confrontational and constructive way.

The law firm now has offices on Victoria Avenue in Harrogate, as well as in Leeds and York.

Mr Jones was also a founder member and former national chair of Resolution, the national association of family lawyers which now has over 6,500 members.

He also chaired its accreditation committee, which remains at the forefront of developing high academic standards and promoting excellence in family law.

Appointed a Deputy District Judge, Mr Jones served in that judicial capacity for 15 years, during which time he also lectured nationally in family law. He qualified in 2012 as one of the country’s first Family Law Arbitrators.

Starbeck Tandoori beat stiff competition from across Yorkshire and the Humber – including the other three finalists, all in York – to win the title.

It was awarded by the Bangladesh Caterers Association for innovation, presentation of food, hygiene standards and customer service. 

Owner Burhan Uddin Khan collected the award from hosts Greg Wallace and TV presenter Tasmin Lucia-Khan at the black-tie event at the Park Plaza London. 

Established in 1960, the BCA represents more than 12,000 UK curry houses, which employ over 100,000 people and turn over £4.2bn a year.

Representatives from 10 businesses visited the college on Wednesday to meet with and interview local students.

Danny Wild, Harrogate College principal, said:

“We were delighted to have so many of our key local employers coming along to support this event, which attracted a lot of interest from our students.

More than half the units under construction on a Ripon business park are now pre-let ahead of the project being completed.

Canalside Business Park, which was previously used by Econ Engineering to store its 900-strong gritter hire fleet, is looking to help redress the shortage of small-scale industrial units in the district.

Owned by Canalside Developments and being constructed by HACS, it is a 25,000 sq ft development located opposite Ripon racecourse, off Navigation Way opposite Travis Perkins, and is scheduled for completion in spring next year.

BID puts focus on Ripon Christmas windows

Ripon Business Improvement District is inviting businesses to enter their Christmas window competition, which has adopted a theme of peace and sanctuary.

The BID hopes as many businesses as possible get involved and make Ripon’s Christmas windows a magical spectacle.

A judging panel, consisting of the Mayor and Mayoress of Ripon Councillor Sid and Mrs Linda Hawke, the Dean of Ripon the Very Revd. John Dobson and The Stray Ferret, will be judging all the windows during the week beginning November 21.

The winning window will receive £200 in advertising from one of the BID’s media partners.

Locals and visitors will be invited to vote via social media and will have the chance to win a Ripon Hamper Company hamper.

The BID will be running its Christmas marketing campaign using the #christmasinripon and will include video footage of the windows and festivities.

The Visit Ripon website will have a dedicated Christmas page highlighting the businesses Christmas windows, offers and events.

Business Breakfast: Harrogate developer completes £5.5m business park

A Harrogate-based developer has completed a £5.5 million new business park in Thrisk.

Marrtree Investments, which has offices at Cardale Park, unveiled the new park at Sowerby Gateway close to the A1(M) and A19.

The first phase was completed in February, and includes tenants such as Screwfix and Toolstation.

Now the second phase has finished with help from Harrogate construction group HACS with 10,000 sq ft of the new development already pre-let to wholesaler PJH Bathroom.

William Marshall, Marrtree Investments director, said:

“Following the success of the first phase of the development, we’re thrilled the entire scheme is now complete.

“The fact that we’ve already pre-let a third of this final phase is proof of the continued high demand for the kind of modern, high-quality employment space with which Marrtree has become synonymous over the years.

Harrogate BID hopeful of success at national awards

Harrogate Business Improvement District is hoping for success at the National BID Awards in London next week.

The business organisation has entered two categories – place-management and special recognition. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on November 3.

Officials hope the BID’s Harrogate floral summer of celebration campaign will come up roses in the special recognition category, whilst its street ranger Chris Ashby – who helped save the life of a young man in Library Gardens — will secure the place-management title.
