A Harrogate-based housing developer has secured £150 million worth of funding to help support its plans for new homes across the UK.

Casa By Moda, which is based at Beckwith Knowle, has been granted an initial £60 million debt facility from NatWest, which will rise to £150 million.

The company said the deal will help to “accelerate our delivery of high-quality new communities across the UK”, which includes creating more than 1,100 rental homes.

The move comes as the firm recently acquired a 223-home site known as Abbey Court between Kirkstall and Headingley in Leeds.

Johnny Caddick, chief executive at Moda Living, said: 

“This new funding package from NatWest is a major milestone in Casa’s growth trajectory. This year we will welcome our first residents into our neighbourhoods in both Glasgow and Leeds, but we’re also gearing up our programme of delivery which will see us achieve our aim of securing more than 5,000 new homes by 2025.”

Harrogate energy firm recognised by WIRED magazine

A Harrogate smart energy company has been recognised as one of WIRED magazines trailblazers of 2023.

The technology publication set up a trailblazer programme, in collaboration with HSBC UK, to shine a light on the innovative, mid-sized businesses.

Among them is Chameleon Technology, which is based on Otley Road.

The firm specialises in smart energy devices and recently delivered its 10 millionth in-home display this summer. It has manufactured on average 1.6 million devices a year.

Mike Woodhall, chief executive at the company, was invited to a celebratory event on behalf of WIRED at the Shears Yard in Leeds.

He said:

“The initiative celebrates companies across the UK that are contributing to the UK becoming a global hub of innovation.

“We are thrilled to have our work in the ongoing revolution of smart home energy recognised, and to join such an inspiring group.”

A government minister has opened the new offices of a Harrogate energy technology firm.

Lord Callanan, minister for energy efficiency and green finance at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, opened the new headquarters of Chameleon Technology at Central House on Otley Road in Harrogate.

The company specialises in technology for energy suppliers, including manufacturing in-home displays to link up to smart meters.

Lord Callanan visited the new office space this morning and met with Mike Woodhall, chief executive of Chameleon Technology, and some of the firm’s engineers.

He also presented a plaque to announce the opening of the new headquarters and gave a short speech.

Lord Callanan said:

“We have already made good progress in rolling out smart meters, with more than 32 million now in homes and small businesses across Great Britain.

“Seeing how much energy they are using in pounds and pence is putting people in control of their use and helping them save money on their bills.

“Working closely with industry partners, we’re well on our way to a more efficient energy system. I was delighted to open Chameleon Technology’s new Harrogate offices and meet the team helping us become a nation of smarter, cleaner energy consumers.”

The move to the new office space comes as the company recently manufactured its 10 millionth in-house display system.

Mr Woodhall added:

“Manufacturing and delivering 10 million IHDs to UK households is a milestone to be proud of. Continued uptake of smart meters, alongside the real-time data provided by IHDs, will help build a flexible, decarbonised and digitalised energy system, one that will benefit both the environment and consumers through lower energy bills.

“Smart meters and integrated IHDs are an integral part of our future energy system.”

A Harrogate company has manufactured its 10 millionth in-home display for smart meters.

Chameleon Technology, which is based on Otley Road, has supplied the devices to energy companies since 2012.

The devices connect to a home’s smart meter in order to show how much energy is being used.

The company delivered the 10 millionth in-home display this summer. It has manufactured on average 1.6 million devices a year.

Housing developer acquires new site in Leeds

A Harrogate housing developer has acquired a 223-home site in Leeds.

Casa By Moda, which is based at Beckwith Knowle, will take on the site which is called Abbey Court and is based between Kirkstall and Headingley.

The company acquired the site from Artisan Real Estate and it is set to include 223 family homes.

The houses will range from one, two and three-bedroom homes.

A Harrogate therapy and coaching centre has celebrated its one-year anniversary this month.

The Harlow, which is based at Cardale Park, launched in July last year to support children, teens, parents, families and couples.

The company has gone onto to employ 25 qualified and accredited practitioners.

Now the firm is aiming to expand by launching a new employee assistance programme, which aims to offer mental health support to professionals and businesses.

A Harrogate businessman has been named green entrepreneur of the year at a national award ceremony.

Mike Woodhall, chief executive of Chameleon Technology, was recognised at the Enterprise Awards 2023.

He picked up the Green Tech Entrepreneur award at the ceremony, which was held at Drapers’ Hall in London.

A Harrogate care provider has invested in a specialist unit for people living with Huntington’s disease.

Vida Healthcare opened the new unit at its Vida Court home, based on Beckwith Head Road.

Called Lindsay House, the facility will provide space for nine people and include a sensory room, medication management, as well as community services such as a GP.

James Rycroft, managing director at Vida Healthcare, said:

“At Vida we are always looking into gaps within the care industry and subsequently identified a lack of support available for people living with Huntington’s disease.

“Our ability to adapt and meet other specialist needs is one of our greatest assets, and we wanted to use this expertise to expand our offering and support more people living with long term conditions.”

Harrogate company launches electric vehicle charger and app

A Harrogate company has launched an electric vehicle charger and free app to improve access to charging points.

Ivie, which is based at Beckwith Knowle, created the charger to help drivers charge their car at home.

Meanwhile, the company said the app will allow people to set up a charging schedule and control the 7kw charger remotely.

It will also help users find public charging points and show whether they are available.

“Adoption of EV technology is a major component in helping to drastically cut carbon emissions, supporting the UK’s goal of transitioning to more sustainable motoring by 2030.

“However, ongoing frustrations around infrastructure and reliability remain and we are aiming to address these with a ‘truly smart’ app alongside our EV charger to encourage faster adoption amongst motorists.”
