Two further covid deaths reported at Harrogate HospitalToday’s figures from Public Health England show 16 new coronavirus cases in the Harrogate district.
This takes the total number of cases in the district since the start of the pandemic to 3,704.
A further two coronavirus deaths have been recorded at Harrogate District Hospital which takes the total to 104. The two deaths were recorded on December 4 and 5.
The Harrogate district has a seven day rate of 95.1 per 100,000. This is still below England’s seven day rate which stands at 147.8 per 100,000 today.
Across the UK a further 17,272 coronavirus cases were reported today.

Next week the covid vaccination programme is set to begin. Vaccinations are set to be delivered from Tuesday with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust the closest provider to the district.
GP-led primary care networks will begin delivering the vaccine in the coming weeks as the programme ramps up.

The figure, from Public Health England, brings the total number of positive tests in the district to 3,688 since the start of the pandemic.
Today the number of deaths recorded at Harrogate Hospital since the start of the pandemic rose to 102. The hospital reported two further deaths today which were recorded on December 3 and 4.
The Harrogate district has a seven day rate of 85.2 cases per 100,000. This remains below the seven day rate across North Yorkshire which stands at the 104.7 per 100,000.
The figure for new cases across the UK showed 15,539 positive coronavirus cases.

Harrogate District Hospital has not reported any new coronavirus deaths today.
However, the hospital did reach a particularly grim milestone of 100 deaths yesterday after reporting one additional death.

Public Health England reported just 14 additional cases in the district today, down from a peak of 95 on November 9.
The Harrogate district now has the lowest infection rate of the seven district and borough council regions in North Yorkshire.
Its seven-day average rate is 97 cases per 100,000 people, which is also well below the England average of 160 per 100,000.

The R number in the district has also fallen to 0.6. Any number below one means the spread of the virus is declining.
Harrogate District Hospital has not reported any additional coronavirus deaths.
The hospital has recorded 99 covid deaths since the start of the pandemic. The last death was recorded over the weekend but happened on Thursday last week,

The death, while reported today, happened on Thursday. November 26.
It also comes as the Harrogate district prepares to move into tier two restrictions on Wednesday as the national lockdown ends.

The rates are lower than other parts of Yorkshire and the Humber, most of which are in tier three.
Scarborough, while at a higher rate than the rest of North Yorkshire, has seen its cases falling.
Positivity of cases is at 8.5%. The government will keep an eye on these indicators and may even change the tiers in a couple of weeks when they are up for review.

Meanwhile there were no new deaths reported at Harrogate District Hospital. The total count remains at 98.
Daily cases also continue to fall in the Harrogate district. The latest figures show an increase of 14 today up to a total of 3,514.

It is the second highest in the county behind Scarborough, which stands at 580.
North Yorkshire is still tracking above the national average. The county has a rate of 311 compared with the England average of 267.

In his announcement yesterday evening the Prime Minister said he hoped these restrictions would curb the infection rate to allow people to see their families in time for Christmas.
The Harrogate Business Improvement District (BID) warned that the impact of this second lockdown could mean some businesses “won’t reopen”.

Many of Harrogate’s businesses have been using recent months to recover from the previous lockdown and have now been left uncertain of their futures.
Harrogate BID has said the main aim of its members is to protect their businesses and the local economy but has made it clear the long-term impact of this could mean some businesses can’t reopen.
Harrogate BID Acting Chair Sara Ferguson said:
“Every business that I know of has been dreading the prospect of another lockdown, as there’s a real chance many won’t reopen if they are forced into a long period of enforced closure.
“Over the last few weeks there has been a rising level of optimism, half term has brought plenty of people into town. If this ‘circuit-breaker’ doesn’t bring the R rate down then what? Is it extended for another month?”

The lockdown is expected to end on December 2 in the hope many can still enjoy Christmas with friends and family.
The festive season brings an annual boost to trade for the hospitality sector.
Anthony Blundell, assistant general manager at the West Park Hotel in Harrogate, is hopeful this year will bring the same.
He said:
“Hospitality needs to be up and running for December. It is the biggest month of the year for the whole sector. We can flex and adapt to whatever is thrown at us but not all businesses are as resilient and it could be really devastating.”
