Three covid cases reported in Harrogate district

Three positive cases of covid have been reported in the Harrogate district.

According to Public Health England figures, the total number of infections since last March stands at 7,732.

As of today, the Government has changed the way it records daily cases of coronavirus in England.

The daily number of cases reported is based on PCR and lateral flow tests returning positive results. However, if someone with a positive lateral flow test later has a negative result with a PCR test, the earlier result will be removed.

Public Health England said on its website:

“The way cases are reported in England has changed. Reported cases are sometimes removed if subsequent tests are negative.

“This happens when cases identified through a positive rapid lateral flow test are followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests within three days that are all negative. These cases are now being removed daily.”

Meanwhile, no further deaths form patients who tested positive for covid have been reported at Harrogate District Hospital.

The death toll at the hospital remains at 179 since last March.

The last reported covid death at the hospital was on April 11.

The Red Lion at South Stainley to reopen with new name and owners

The Red Lion pub on the A61 in South Stainley is to reopen on Wednesday under new owners and with a new name.

Partners Graham Usher and Matt Rose have bought the pub, which has been renamed The Inn South Stainley, reflecting its village location between Harrogate and Ripon.

For years, the pub was popular with families because of its Wacky Warehouse soft play area.

The previous owners of The Inn South Stainley, which closed in March last year, invested £1.5m on converting the original standalone building into eight bedrooms, refurbishing the interior and creating another four guest rooms on its first floor.

The venue will offer accommodation and serve gastro pub meals, drinks and snacks. It is planned to open the restaurant and function suite in July.

There are also plans for two teepees with fire pits in different parts of the inn’s extensive grounds, to host private functions, including private wedding parties.

On 36 bus route

The Inn South Stainley will be managed by Mr Usher and Mr Rose’s hospitality consultancy, Mattgray Hospitality.

Launched in January 2019, the business already operates Selby pubs The Castle Inn and the Drovers Arms.

To replicate their formula at South Stainley, the two men have brought with them the Drovers’ long-standing head chef, Shane White, and recruited Chris Lawton as general manager.

Mr Usher said the pub was “exactly what we were looking for”, adding:

“It had recently been refurbished to a very high standard and included guest rooms. And with the number 36 Ripon, Harrogate, Leeds bus stopping right outside, it’s ideal for staff and customers who want to leave the car at home.”

Mr Rose said:

“Many people still call it by its previous name, The Red Lion, and talk about it being the place to go to eat and drink. Our intention is to make this well-known pub a must visit destination again for those who love great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, health officials warned today that North Yorkshire could face a fresh period of “turbulence” after a small number of cases of the Indian variant of covid had been confirmed in the county.

Louise Wallace, the county’s director of public health, told a North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum briefing today that cases of the B16172 variant had been identified, although she said she could not confirm how many or where.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms Wallace said North Yorkshire was still “well prepared” to deal with any variants of concern and that the advice to residents remained the same.

She said:

“There have been a small number of cases of the Indian variant identified across North Yorkshire.

“As the public would expect, national Test and Trace and Public Health England have been working together to identify and follow up the cases and their contacts to minimise the risk of spread.

“Our public health advice remains the same whatever the variant of covid – continue with the basics of hands, face, space and fresh air, and meet people outside rather than inside as much as possible.”

Richard Webb, director of health and adult services at the county council, told today’s briefing that while infection rates remained low, the county should still expect some “turbulence” this summer as he urged people to take up their vaccine offer “to protect ourselves, our families and our communities”.

Meanwhile, North Yorkshire health officials have warned the county will have to stay on high alert over covid for at least another year as the virus “won’t just evaporate suddenly” this summer.

Speaking at a briefing today, Richard Webb, director of health and adult services at the county council, said while there was a “growing sense of optimism” in the lifting of lockdown restrictions, the threat of new variants and need for booster vaccines meant the pandemic was far from over.

He told North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum:

“Pandemics don’t just go away – the thinking globally is they tend to take two to three years to work their way through..

“We are already talking about boosters… and we will continue to have isolated outbreaks in workplaces or schools. We may also have situations where we have new variants and have to do surge testing.

“There is a growing sense of optimism, however, we will still have to be on a high level of alert for probably the next 12 months.”
