Firefighters in Harrogate responded to two unusual false alarms today.
At 8.46am, a crew from Harrogate responded to reports of a fire alarm sounding on Kings Road in the town.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident report said:
“This was a false alarm caused by burnt toast.”
Shortly afterwards, the Harrogate crew was summoned to The Spinney in Knaresborough at 10.01am after another fire alarm went off. The incident report said:
“This was a false alarm, where an alarm clock had been mistaken for a fire alarm.”
It was the third strange false alarm in less than a day for the Harrogate firefighters, who responded to a house alarm going off at 5.04pm yesterday on Leeds Road.
Again, there was no fire — the cause this time was described “a faulty deaf alarm”.

Firefighters called to Harrogate hospital to remove girl’s ring
Firefighters were called to Harrogate District Hospital last night to remove a ring from the finger of an 11-year-old girl.
An appliance from Harrogate Fire Station on Skipton Road was summoned to the hospital ay 6.16pm last night.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log this morning said:
“A Harrogate fire appliance attended A&E to use an electric saw to remove a ring from the finger of an 11-year-old girl.”
It added the request to attend was made by medical staff and the unnamed child and mother were unable to travel to Harrogate fire station.
Last night also saw Knaresborough firefighters respond to a fire in a back garden on Whincup Avenue at 9.42pm.
The incident log said household items were being burned and advice was given.

A person was taken to hospital today after a two-vehicle collision on the A59 at Blubberhouses.
Harrogate firefighters responded to the incident at 3.13pm this afternoon.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log said one person was trapped in their vehicle.
It added:
“Crews made both vehicles safe and removed the door of one vehicle to allow paramedics access to the trapped casualty.
“Crews assisted in extricating the casualty, who was suffering head injuries, before handing them into the care of ambulance crews to be transported to hospital.”
The incident led to delays on the main route between Harrogate and Skipton.

Harrogate firefighters respond to 2am hair straightener call
Harrogate firefighters were called out in the early hours of this morning to a report of a female locked out of her home where a pair of hair straighteners had been left turned on.
Fearing the straighteners could catch fire, the crew managed to get into the house via a first floor bedroom window — and discovered no straighteners had in fact been left turned on.
The call to the house on Hookstone Avenue came at 2.06am.
Earlier, firefighters from Knaresborough were called to a small fire in the open on Castlegate at 6.39pm.
They located the fire, which consisted of books and paper, and extinguished it using buckets of water.

Harrogate firefighters tackle car fire and three-vehicle collision
Two people were taken to hospital following a three-vehicle collision on Skipton Road in Harrogate last night.
Harrogate firefighters were alerted at 7.02pm to the incident, which was also attended by police.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log says:
“Crews liaised with police on scene and administered initial first aid to occupants whilst awaiting the arrival of ambulance crews.
“Crews stabilised one vehicle to enable the occupant to be assisted out. Occupants of two vehicles transported to hospital via road ambulance. Crews left the incident in the hands of the police to await recovery of the vehicles.”
North Yorkshire Police has not given any details about the incident, which was the second one attended by Harrogate firefighters in little over an hour.
At 5.49pm they were called to Menwith Hill Road to reports of a vehicle fire. The incident log says:
`’Crews extinguished the fire and dampened the vehicle down before isolating the battery and making the vehicle safe. Crews cordoned off the area and left the incident with the police to await recovery.”

Firefighters deal with blaze in planter outside shopping centre
Harrogate firefighters were called out last night to deal with a fire in a planter.
A planter on Station Parade, outside Victoria Shopping Centre, caught fire at about 10.45pm.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident log said the fire was smouldering when Harrogate firefighters arrived.
It added:
“Crews used buckets of water and gave advice to on site security staff.”
Harrogate firefighters also dealt with a fire in the open on Jenny Field Drive yesterday morning at 10.22am.
The incident log said:
“This was a fire to a downed tree. Crews extinguished this using a bucket of water and small hand tools.”
The Harrogate district, like much of the country, is currently rated ‘very high risk’ in the Met Office’s fire severity index.

Firefighters called to Harrogate’s Victoria Shopping Centre
Harrogate’s Victoria Shopping Centre closed this afternoon after a reported fire.
The centre shut at about 3pm and staff and shoppers were evacuated as firefighters were summoned to the scene.
Eyewitness Paul Ivison, from Harrogate, said people were told there had been a small electrical fire in one of the stores, believed to be New Look, but no major damage had occurred.
“Three fire engines arrived but there was no smoke seen.
“About 100 people were outside when all the tenants and shoppers had been evacuated. The whole centre and exterior units were closed.
“Everyone was very calm.”
The shopping centre reopened at about 3.30pm.

An elderly woman had to be freed from her car by firefighters after a crash in the Harrogate district last night.
Both Harrogate crews were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision at Spring Lane, Kearby at about 8.20pm.
According to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident log, two elderly occupants of a Volkswagen managed to get out the car but returned to the vehicle to await the emergency services.
A man in his 20s, who was also involved in the incident, was out of his BMW when the firefighters arrived.
The incident log adds:
“The elderly male then exited the car and after assessment the ambulance crews requested the roof removal of the VW to extricate the elderly female due to suspected injuries.
“All occupants were transported to hospital for treatment mainly for minor injuries. Fire crew used 2 sets of e-draulic cutters, stabilisation blocks, windscreen cutter, sharps kit and crew power.”
Kearby is near Kirkby Overblow, between Harrogate and Wetherby on the fringes of the Harrogate district.
