A group of brave Harrogate district women took to the stage in a state of undress last night for the opening night of Calendar Girls.

The sell-out show, which ends on Saturday, sees members of Kirkby Overblow Dramatic Society perform an adapted version of the original Calendar Girls film.

The 1999 film is based on the true story of how a group of middle-aged women from Rylstone and District Women’s Institute, near Skipton, posed nude for a risqué calendar to raise money for leukaemia cancer.  They have since raised over £5m for the charity Blood Cancer UK.

Three of the original Calendar Girls — Angela Baker, Chris Clancy and Linda Logan — will be in Kirkby Overblow for Saturday night’s finale at All Saints Church.

The cast also agreed to pose for a 2023 calendar shot creatively at local landmarks in Kirkby Overblow.

The heart-warming play, written by Tim Firth, is directed by Claire McKenzie from Harrogate.  Auditions were held in August.

All profits from the production and calendar will be split between the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre at Harrogate District Hospital, cancer support charity Maggie’s Yorkshire and Blood Cancer UK.

Dr John Fairfield, chairman of Kirkby Overblow Dramatic Society, said:

“The similarities between the villages of Rylstone and Kirkby Overblow and their close-knit communities made it an obvious choice. The dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm of the cast and crew is inspiring. We are absolutely delighted that Chris, Angela and Linda are able to join us”.

Angela Baker said:

“It is a marvellous legacy that after 23 years when we embarked on our Alternative WI calendar, we are here today still supporting the cause. It’s thanks to casts and crews like this up and down the country that keeps the Calendar Girls story alive and continues to raise funds for Blood Cancer UK.”

A Ukrainian soloist will sing of peace on earth in a special Christmas concert set to take place in a village church near Harrogate.

Soprano Natalka Pasicznyk is one of three soloists to join Knaresborough Choral Society for Carols by Candlelight at All Saints’ Church in Kirkby Overblow.

She will sing Peace on Earth by modern British composer Errollyn Wallen, made particularly poignant by the war in Ukraine which continues to affect members of Natalka’s family.

The choir’s musical director, William Bruce, said:

“Errollyn Warren’s new composition, Peace on Earth, is just so appropriate and Natalka is going to sing that as a solo.

“We always strive to make our programme as diverse and inclusive as possible. Most of the audience won’t have heard some of the pieces we’re performing so although there will be some familiar carols in there, there will be something new too.”

As well as Natalka, the concert will feature tenor Alexander Kyle and bass Isaac Cooper, accompanied David Grealy.

William joined the 50-strong Knaresborough Choral Society around a year ago and this will be the first time he has put together the programme for one of its concerts.

His full-time job is working with choristers at Leeds Cathedral, so he said the role with Knaresborough Choral Society appealed because it allowed him to select different pieces and explore some of the great composers, including Mozart and Bach.

He added:

“The choir members are very ambitious which is a real virtue because they are dedicated and work so hard through the week.

“My job is to put it all together which is wonderful, because some choirs only turn up for the social side. We do have that, but they also put the time in and we see the results.

“They deserve the best soloists in the country to come and sing with them so I’m really delighted with the line-up and I know we’re going to put on a great night of music.”

The concert takes place on Saturday, December 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Shoulder of Mutton in Kirkby Overblow, Art in the Mill in Knaresborough, or by emailing Knaresborough Choral Society.

A new playground in the village of Kirkby Overblow, south of Harrogate, was officially opened this weekend.

The play area now boasts a giant tractor, climbing frame, nest swing and roundabout – all on astroturf.

Local mum Katie Fox told the Stray Ferret that she started to look into how to renovate the area two years ago:

“It was not very nice. It was run down and the equipment was really old.

“It was lacking colour and modernisation and needed a good update. There were also no disability facilities and it was all muddy.”

Katie said she’d spotted that the play area at Ripley had been funded by a government community grant so she contacted Harrogate Borough Council which supported the application. Soon a village committee was formed to work through the application process – part of which required the villagers to raise 10% of what was required.

So, while the committee worked to complete the form, it started fund raising.

It held quizzes at the Shoulder of Mutton pub and took contributions from village’s summer arts festival. There were also generous donations from locals and the playground’s fence was supplied and built by the Moortown Group.

Finally they heard that the scheme had been awarded £70,000, the village had raised what it needed to and work could start.

Katie thinks the result has transformed the village:

“Life is so expensive nowadays – it is so nice to walk or bike and go to the local park and sit on the benches and have a picnic.

“We want to include a nature area – it is such a big space so there is loads of potential to add more to it and fund raise more.

“We want to involve the local school more. It’s a nicer, prettier place to be and the different play equipment means it is more suited to wider age groups.”

The ceremony this weekend was attended by villagers, councillors and the mayor of Harrogate, Cllr Victoria Oldham.

Searches are continuing for missing man Jesus Moreno who disappeared more than two weeks ago after catching a bus bound for Harrogate.

The brewer was spotted on CCTV catching a 36 bus from Leeds bus station at 6.10am on Monday, August 1.

He got off the bus at Swindon Lane near Dunkeswick, just north of Harewood bridge on the A61, at 6.39am. He was then seen on CCTV near the bridge at 8.14am.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police today said there have been no further sightings of him since then and officers are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who may have seen him.

The 41-year-old’s family, friends and colleagues at Piglove Brewing Co have continued to post on social media to try to trace him. Posters have also appeared around Harrogate asking people to check their CCTV and dashcam footage from the Harewood area on Monday, August 1.

In a video posted to the company’s social media accounts, they said:

“We need to ask you now not just to think if you’ve seen him, but we need you to look at your CCTV throughout the week from Monday, August 1 all the way up to today.

“If you live anywhere near the Harewood bridge, anywhere near the A61, Netherby, Weeton, East Keswick, these types of places, we’re calling out for people now.

“We’ve got to get our brother home safe.”

Last Monday, a week after his disappearance, police said they were concerned for Jesus’s welfare and were going to begin searching the areas near where he was last seen.

4.40pm: 28 street parties in Harrogate district

North Yorkshire County Council has issued orders preventing traffic from entering 28 streets in the Harrogate district over the jubilee weekend.

Most orders are for Sunday, which is the main day for street parties, but there are some for Friday and Saturday.

Remember, many of these events are for residents living on the streets to enjoy so if you don’t live on the street check with the organisers before you attend.

3.56pm: Motorway works in Yorkshire paused for jubilee

Good news if you’re planning to head out on the motorways, including the A1(M) in the Harrogate district, over the next four days.

National Highways, the government-owned company that maintains the motorways, has halted most roadworks.

1.30pm: Jubilee celebrations begin in Bilton

A jubilee celebration took place this morning at the weekly coffee morning Thirst, held at Dene Park Community Centre in Woodfield and organised by St John’s Church in Bilton.

12.09pm: Weather forecast good – except for Sunday

There won’t be too much sunbathing but at least it will be mainly dry, although the forecast for Sunday doesn’t look great for the street parties.

10.15am: Preparations in place in Ripon

Preparations are also in place in Ripon ahead of the platinum jubilee celebrations tomorrow.

A road closure will be in place around Market Square in readiness for the stage where 24 acts will be performing.

Meanwhile, red, white and blue flags are flying in Kirkgate and across the city centre.

Ripon Cathedral is decked out in finery for tomorrow’s civic service. It will also host jubilee tea party on Friday afternoon with people born in every year of the Queen’s reign in attendance.

Fresh bunting has been put up this morning on West Park Stray as excitement builds up for the jubilee.

Preparations for Jubilee Square on the Stray are expected to continue throughout today.

9am: Harrogate Borough Council issues street party bins plea

Waste and recycling collections are happening as usual over the four-day weekend, prompting Harrogate Borough Council to say:

“If you’ve put bunting up in your village or across your street please ensure it is high enough for our vehicles – and emergency vehicles – to get past.”

Kirkby Overblow crafts its own jubilee beacon

People in Kirkby Overblow have come together to make a jubilee beacon.

The beacon has been designed, made and engineered by locals ahead of it being lit on Thursday night.

The groundwork and engineering plans were done by the Moortown group, ran by the McManus family from Kearby. The Oak Pole was made by Yorkshire Oak Frames.

The  horse shoe basket was made from old horseshoes from the Great Yorkshire Shoe by farrier Adam Fox, from Netherby, as a nod to the Queen’s love of horses.

The final step to get it in place was the job of local farmer Rob Parkes.

The village will also host a BBQ on Thursday ahead of the beacon being lit. Organisers say the beacon will be able to be seen as far away as Almscliffe Crag and the White Horse near Thirsk.

Windsor House rebrands as The House of Windsor

The Windsor House in Harrogate has rebranded itself to The House of Windsor ahead of the jubilee.

The period office building, near Valley Gardens, has also been decorated. Passers-by will now see the Queen, in cardboard form, stood alongside the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Karen Winspear, property manager at Windsor House said:

“We wanted to create something to celebrate the jubilee that the businesses in our building could enjoy, as well as those who will be visiting the number of events planned at Valley Gardens. With a name like ours, we couldn’t resist a royal makeover to mark such a fantastic occasion!”

Queen Mary’s jubilee hat parade

Students at Queen Mary’s School at Topcliffe wore straw hats when they took part in a jubilee hat parade.

Judged by hat maker Jonny Beardsall, the parade also included a performance of the platinum jubilee song.

There was also a picnic and a summer fete.

Belmont Grosvenor School hosts jubilee garden party

“Our BGS Jubilee Garden Party was an afternoon to remember with all our school community, from the youngest in nursery, to our oldest pupils in Year 6, joining in and enjoying all the fun of the fair.

“There was some wonderful baking, and some most impressive artistic creations – thanks to our PTA for staging such a fabulous event.”

An elderly woman had to be freed from her car by firefighters after a crash in the Harrogate district last night.

Both Harrogate crews were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision at Spring Lane, Kearby at about 8.20pm.

According to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident log, two elderly occupants of a Volkswagen managed to get out the car but returned to the vehicle to await the emergency services.

A man in his 20s, who was also involved in the incident, was out of his BMW when the firefighters arrived.

The incident log adds:

“The elderly male then exited the car and after assessment the ambulance crews requested the roof removal of the VW to extricate the elderly female due to suspected injuries.

“All occupants were transported to hospital for treatment mainly for minor injuries. Fire crew used 2 sets of e-draulic cutters, stabilisation blocks, windscreen cutter, sharps kit and crew power.”

Kearby is near Kirkby Overblow, between Harrogate and Wetherby on the fringes of the Harrogate district.

North Yorkshire Police has appealed for information after an unspecified number of watches were stolen from a house in Kearby, near Harrogate.

The incident happened between 7pm and 11.30pm on Saturday, March 13.

According to police, suspects entered a secure window and stole the watches from a bedroom.

Kearby is a small village in the south of the Harrogate district, near Kirkby Overblow.

Police hope the public can help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

They are particularly interested to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time.
