Knaresborough firefighters rescued a dog that got stuck in the bottom of a tree today (April 13).
A three-year-old Patterdale Terrier called Pip became interested in something in a gap at the base of the tree and could not get out, according to a post on the fire station’s Facebook page.
On call firefighters from Knaresborough were summoned to Hunsingore, a village seven miles from the town, to help at 3.13pm.
The post said:
“Crew used small tools and axes, while crew manager Mark Wilson used his dog whispering skills to coax the dog out with treats and a bit of gentle persuasion.”
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident report said Pip was stuck in tree roots.

Car destroyed by fire on A1(M) in Harrogate district
Traffic was halted on the southbound A1(M) between junctions 46 and 47 last night when a Vauxhall Corsa caught fire.
The vehicle was completely destroyed by the blaze, which occurred at about 8.45pm between Flaxby and Wetherby Services.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log said:
“Knaresborough and Harrogate crews attended a Vauxhall Corsa well alight on the hard shoulder.
“The fire is believed to have been caused by a mechanical fault. Crews extinguished the fire using two hose reels. The car was destroyed by fire.”

Last night National Highways alerted motorists to the incident and warned them to expect delays. Knaresborough Fire Station posted on social media this morning the road re-opened shortly afterwards.

Car turned into fireball at Flaxby
A car was turned into a fireball on the A59 near Flaxby today.
Knaresborough firefighters were summoned at 8.55am to the main road, which is close to the A1.
Knaresborough Fire Station said in a Facebook post:
“The police were already on scene providing scene safety. The fire was extinguished by two breathing apparatus wearers using two hose reel Jets.”
No further details are available.

It was the first of two serious incidents in the Harrogate district today.
At 3.58pm, firefighters from Harrogate and Knaresborough responded to reports of a kitchen fire at a home on Rowan Close, Harrogate.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log says:
“The female occupant was out of the property on arrival of crews.
“Two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire and a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to ventilate the property.”

A foggy day of remembrance across the Harrogate district
From Ripon Cathedral to Knaresborough Fire Station, people fell silent for two minutes across the Harrogate district today to pay their respects to the war dead.
Thousands of people stood 20-deep in the fog around the war memorial in Harrogate for the traditional parade and outdoor service.
Thousands of people also gathered at Spa Gardens and on nearby streets in Ripon, where services were held at the war memorial and in Ripon Cathedral.

Further afield, Junior soldiers from Harrogate’s Army Foundation College took part in a Remembrance Sunday service at Merville Battery, France, as part of a trip learning about the Normandy invasion.

Besides the formal ceremonies, many people took time out of their day to observe the two-minute silence.
Firefighters at Knaresborough lined up to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It marked the culmination of commemorations, which started with a minute’s silence on Friday. November 11 at 11am.
Pateley Bridge, which traditionally holds its main service on the 11th whatever the day, did so again this year.
Harrogate’s Ashville College also held a service on Friday before students and staff, along with members of the governing body and former pupils, gathered in front of the memorial to hold a two-minute silence and to lay wreaths and poppies.
Of the 300 former Ashvillians called up in the First World War, 38 died in the conflict. Eight of those were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
In the Second World War, 465 former pupils and teachers volunteered for the forces, and of those 59 were killed.

Fire crews were called to a bale and field on fire in Aldborough yesterday.
Pictures released by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue show crews tackling the blaze at 11.49am.
Fire crews from Knaresborough, Ripon, Wetherby and the water bowser from Tadcaster stopped the spread of the fire and extinguished the baler.
The fire spread from the baler to the stubble field measuring approximately 10 acres, according to the service’s fire log.
Firefighters have urged people to be vigilant during the soaring temperatures this week to prevent the spread of fires near farmland.

This includes discarding of cigarettes properly, not using disposable barbecues near crops, checking straw and hay bales which can overheat and keeping farm machinery in good working order.
Last month, Harrogate firefighters tackled five field fires during the hottest day of the year.
Crews were called to battle blazes at Forest Lane in Harrogate and Marton-cum-Grafton among others.
