Stand in memory of Ripon Rugby Club stalwart backed by councillorsRipon Rugby Club’s plan to build a 100-seater stand at its Mallorie Park ground has moved a step closer.
If approved by North Yorkshire Council, the new spectator facility will be paid for from a legacy left to the club by former first team captain and president Tim Wray, who died in 2018.
At its full Ripon City Council meeting on Monday, members gave their support to a planning application, which also includes a request to build pitch-side shelters/dugouts for coaches, players and disabled supporters.
Other planned improvements are a new shed for ground maintenance equipment, a security fence and creation of a new entry route into the site.
Should planning consent be granted, the stand, alongside the club’s first team pitch, will be named The Tim Wray Stand as a lasting tribute to the club’s benefactor.
Ripon Rugby Union Football Club, is approaching its 140th anniversary, having been founded in 1886.
The club, which has 800 members and its own clubhouse, has two men’s and one women’s teams, along with one of the largest junior sections in the north of England.
In addition to its focus on rugby, it hosts Ripon Runners and provides facilities that are used by community groups and organisations.

Ripon City Council has described a planning application for a 66-bed care home at Ripon City AFC’s Mallorie Park ground as ‘premature’
At its full January meeting, members voted unanimously to reject plans by Leeds-based care company LNT Care Developments. However, the final decision will be made by Harrogate Borough Council.
Ripon City Council leader Andrew Williams told the meeting:
“While we want to see the football club thrive and are happy to meet with them and work with them, this application is premature because the football club has not confirmed exactly where it will be relocating to.”
Fellow councillors shared that view, but said that they would like to extend an invitation to the club, which has played at Mallorie Park for more than 100 years, to present its proposals to the city council.

In October, club secretary and former player Daniel Metcalfe told the Stray Ferret:
“A shortlist of potential locations has been drawn up, but the move will only take place when we have a new site with all necessary planning and other approvals in place.”
The Stray Ferret has attempted to clarify with the club whether a new site has been agreed, but no response had been received at the time of publication.
If LNT’s plans are approved by Harrogate Borough Council, the Mallorie Park ground would be transformed by the construction of a two-storey home specialising in general and dementia care. The proposed development includes 25 parking spaces.

“The proposed care home would provide a character and form of development that should positively
enhance the character of the site and surrounding area, whilst also offering an important local
community service.
The development would also have a positive impact within the area by improving employment
opportunities, not only during the construction phase but also in the longer term when the care home
becomes fully operational.”

Ripon City Football Club reveals plans to relocateRipon City AFC, has announced plans to move from its Mallorie Park ground and create a new custom-built facility elsewhere in the city.
The club, which celebrates its 125th anniversary next year, has been playing at the ground for more than 100 years.
But a long-held ambition to find a more suitable location is now taking shape, following a formal offer to acquire the site made by an unnamed care home operator.
Club secretary and former player Daniel Metcalfe told the Stray Ferret:
“We’ve been looking elsewhere for many years and by drawing up and publishing plans on our website, we are signalling our serious intent.
“This is the first major piece in our jigsaw and there are many hurdles to cross, but we are determined to create a new place to call home and see the club thrive over the next 100-plus years.”
He added:
“A shortlist of potential locations has been drawn up, but the move will only take place when we have a new site with all necessary planning and other approvals in place.”

On its website, where initial draft plans can be viewed, the club says its privately-owned ground:
“Has significant challenges across a number of areas such as lack of security, unauthorised use, criminal behaviour (drug dealing, drug use and violent crime), criminal damage, limited to one pitch and more importantly restrictions on improvements.”
As a not-for-profit community amateur sports club run by volunteers, Ripon City AFC plans to use proceeds from the sale of its ground to develop new facilities and states on its website:
“The aspirations for our new facility will be a purpose-built, secure facility with a floodlit 3G pitch, a floodlit grass pitch, seated stands, multipurpose clubhouse containing community and event spaces with bar and catering facilities, fully accessible changing spaces and a first-floor housing classrooms and office space.”
Ripon AFC accepts that its plans will not have unanimous support, saying:
“We appreciate that not everyone will be supportive of our proposals.”
It does, however, add:
“The proposed facilities will be a game changer for sport (not just football) in Ripon and the wider district.
“A new facility would also support the club to grow on and off the pitch to ensure that we survive for another 125 years.”
The 150-member club, has 100 registered players in teams that compete in the West Yorkshire League, Harrogate and District Premier League, the North East Regional Women’s Football League and the Harrogate and District Junior Football League.
