Famous faces from football and beyond have paid tribute to Rachel Daly’s England career following this week’s news of her retirement.

Harrogate-born Daly announced her decision on Wednesday, just a day after the Lionesses 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland.

The Aston Villa forward, 32, featured in some of England’s most pivotal matches during her eight-year international career, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup final and as a Euro 2022 winner.

News of her departure therefore sparked a lot of tributes.

England and Arsenal footballer Beth Mead praised Daly on social media:

“So proud of you, no words to describe how gutted I am but what an international career it’s been. So happy to have been a part of it. Love you Rachy.”

England captain and Chelsea defender, Millie Bright, said she was the “proudest best friend” of all Daly has achieved in her international career, adding:

“I don’t have many words right now. I’ve shed a lot of tears knowing this was coming.

“You’ve given your heart and soul to your country over and over again. I love you.”

Manchester United and England goalkeeper Mary Earps, who shared the pitch with Daly at last year’s World Cup, called her a “national treasure”, while Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood said she is “one of the best, on and off the pitch”.

Former England men’s player Ian Wright said Daly had an “unbelievable” international career, and reminded her she is a “European champion”.

Even the Prince of Wales, an Aston Villa fan, praised Daly’s England career. On the Prince and Princess of Wales’ X account, formerly Twitter, the royal wrote:

“Thank you for so many unforgettable performances with Lionesses. Plenty more goals for Villa now! W.”

Daly began her football career at Killinghall Nomads Football Club.

She has since gone on to play for Leeds United, Lincoln Ladies and even Houston Dash in the USA before she returned to England to play for Aston Villa in 2022.

She amassed 84 senior caps throughout her England career and scored 16 goals.

Daly will continue her club football career at Aston Villa.

Ex-England footballer Micah Richards fined for speeding in Knaresborough

Former England footballer Micah Richards has been fined for speeding in Knaresborough.

Richards, 34, of Nidd, near Harrogate, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the offence.

He pleaded guilty to speeding in excess of 30 mph on the B6165 at an address listed as Howe Hill in Knaresborough on August 3 last year.

A separate charge of failing to identify the driver of a vehicle in relation to another traffic offence on December 27, 2022, was withdrawn.

The 34-year-old, who was driving a Rolls Royce at the time, was fined £666 and his licence was endorsed with three penalty points.

The magistrates also ordered Richards to pay a victim surcharge of £266 and court costs of £90.

Richards was previously banned from driving for six months in 2013 after he failed to respond to two speeding notices sent to his home address.

The former footballer made 203 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa and Manchester City, where he won the league in 2012 and FA Cup in 2011, before retiring in 2019.

He also won 13 caps for England between 2006 and 2012.

Richards now works as a pundit for Sky Sports and BBC Sport.

Harrogate’s Rachel Daly scores twice on dream return to England

Rachel Daly’s remarkable year continued today when she scored twice on her Aston Villa debut in the Women’s Super League.

Daly was a key player in England Lionesses’ success at Euro 22 in the summer.

The Harrogate-born player subsequently signed a three-year contract with Villa to return to England after a six-year stint in the National Women’s Soccer League in America with Houston Dash.

In today’s opening WSL fixture, Daly’s curled strike gave Villa a 2-0 lead in the home fixture against Manchester City. After City fought back to lead, Daly pounced to score the winner and be named player of the match.

The exciting match was broadcast live on BBC Two and watched live by 7,000 fans at Villa Park in Birmingham.

Daly played at left back for England at Euro 2022 but has reverted to her forward role with Villa, who finished ninth of 12 in the WSL last season. City were third, so today’s thrilling win was an ideal start to Daly’s new adventure.
