Masterchef winner ranks Bettys mince pies as top festive treat

The winner of Masterchef 2022 has visited Bettys in Harrogate to give his verdict on the brand’s traditional mince pies.

Eddie Scott has been reviewing the festive favourites from numerous outlets since late October — and this week was the turn of Harrogate’s famous café and retailer.

Scoring Bettys’ classic mince pies 9.2 out of 10 on his Instagram account, he said:

“This mince pie is jammed full of mincemeat, absolutely. The pastry has a beautiful texture. This is Eddie’s standard.

“Mincemeat is ample, rich, delicious. It’s spiced, full of booze, the pastry is crumbly. It’s like a home-made pastry.”

Eddie praised the presentation of the mince pies and the design of the box, which he described as “like a 1930s cocktail glass”.

After winning Masterchef this year, Eddie quit his job as a marine pilot based in Hull to pursue a career in food. He has worked for Gordon Ramsay and at the popular Pipe and Glass in Beverley this year, and has almost 50,000 followers on Instagram

Each week, he posts a new mince pie review, and has so far covered brands including the Co-op, Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s.

Bettys is currently the highest-rated, ahead of M&S at 8.6, Sainsbury’s at 8.4, Greggs at 8.2 and Iceland at 8.1.

At £18 for 12, the Bettys box is among the more expensive Eddie has reviewed, but scored higher than some of the other luxury brands. Fortnum and Mason’s box of six for £12.95 was described as “underwhelming”, while boutique bakery Gails was given just 3.1 for its “awful” box of six for £14.

Concluding his Bettys review, Eddie added:

“This is in a different league. This is knocking my socks off. It just tastes like such a home-made product.

“If you want to buy some mince pies for a special occasion, these are the ones to get, because these are luxury.

“Yorkshire have done it again, because everything in Yorkshire is better.”

Eddie isn’t the first to rate Bettys’ mince pies as among the best: they came out top in a Good Housekeeping poll earlier this year.

Bettys said the time taken to craft the mince pies with passion was behind their success, along with many of its other festive products which also frequently rank highly in taste tests.

Ruth Burke-Kennedy from Bettys said:

“We were thrilled when Eddie got in touch to ask to review our classic mince pies, having rooted for him on Masterchef.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with his Instagram review. It certainly drew attention to us when he posted it yesterday, and they were our second best-selling product online, after our Night Before Christmas gift box.”

Family, food and famous faces at the Great Yorkshire Show

Around 140,000 visitors are set to descend on Harrogate next week for the Great Yorkshire Show.

The county’s showpiece agricultural event will take place over four days from Tuesday to Friday at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

There is always so much to see and do. So, as lifestyle editor, I’ve delved into what is on offer when it comes to family entertainment, food and drink and famous faces.

Family

There is plenty of free entertainment at the Discovery Zone.

When I visited the show last year with my three-year-old, we absolutely loved the Discovery Zone.

Slightly off the beaten track, it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you’re taking the kids.

The area is described as “offering both fun and learning opportunities for all the family to find out more about food, farming and the countryside”.

This year the Discovery Zone will be showcasing regenerative agriculture, to tell the story of environmental practices that are shaping modern farming.

A wildflower meadow has been created for visitors to enjoy and picnic alongside, and interpretation boards will explain how farmers and landowners carefully manage the land to harness nature and wildlife.

Expect a full array of completely free and interactive activities, workshops and demonstrations for families and young people, from wand and felt making, to meeting reptiles and milking a demonstration dairy cow.

This year there will be a new careers hotdesk, organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and supported by agricultural colleges and vets. There will be an opportunity to ask the hosts about routes into agricultural careers and free goodie bags.

Food and drink

Shaun Rankin, of Grantley Hall.

If you’re into your food and drink, our county undoubtedly has some of the best in the world.

This year foodies are in for treat when the winner of MasterChef 2022, Eddie Scott, and Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen line up with a host of well-known regional chefs to cook up some of the region’s finest produce.

The Great Yorkshire Food Theatre will feature more than 20 chefs, including Callum Bowmer of Horto at Rudding Park, Harrogate, Dragon’s Den contestant Will Chew of Mak Tok, in Sheffield, Michelin-starred Shaun Rankin of Grantley Hall, near Ripon, and Nathan Richardson-Kelly of Castle Howard, York.

Dishes being demonstrated range from steamed rhubarb muthiya to halibut and from chicken pancakes to slow roasted beef.

MasterChef winner Eddie appears on Tuesday at 2pm. While shepherdess Amanda shares some of her favourite family recipes from her bestselling book ‘Celebrating the Seasons’ on the Friday at 2.30pm.

Great Yorkshire Food Theatre host Sue Nelson said:

“We’re thrilled to be hosting some great names who between them exude incredible talent showcasing the best of Yorkshire’s culinary scene.

“It’s a great coup to have got Eddie to appear on his home turf so soon after his MasterChef win and he joins a brilliant gourmet line-up oozing passion and skill.”

The Game Cookery Theatre makes the most of Yorkshire game, including venison, pigeon, grouse and rabbit. The game theatre also features a number of chefs, with host Steph Moon joining forces with grouse expert John Cavana to create grouse nuggets and grouse with black pudding.

New for 2022 is an appearance by Year 8 students from Harrogate’s St Aidan’s High School. They have won the opportunity to cook at the show, with two different forms producing their own game pizzas.

Game Cookery Theatre host Steph Moon said:

“It is fantastic to have a full programme at the show again. We have some new chefs and some young chefs and as always we will be showcasing the very best Yorkshire produce in both theatres.”

Famous faces

Matt Baker.

For many years the Fashion Show brought a touch of glamour to the Great Yorkshire Show.

This year, organisers are trying something different, with a new celebrity chat show being held in its place.

TV presenter Christine Talbot will host the show on the new GYS Stage, which will be staged in the former fashion show building next to grey gate.

Farming celebrities will be interviewed and will then have a chat with fans afterwards in a meet and greet zone.

This will include Countryfile presenter Adam Henson on Tuesday, JLS popstar-turned farmer JB Gill on Wednesday, TV host Matt Baker MBE on Thursday and the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen on Friday.

The Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright will take to the stage each day of the show.

Mr Wright said:

“We always love coming to the Great Yorkshire Show and have been coming for years, with my family as well as filming. I’m delighted to be taking part in the brand new GYS Stage which will be an exciting new addition to the show.”

In 2021, organisers capped the number of visitors at 104,000 and made the show a four-day event to spread out the number of visitors due to covid.

This year, the show is back to full strength and the last few tickets are available for Friday. Tickets are available here and won’t be sold at the gates.

Harrogate mum ‘excited’ to appear on Masterchef tonight

A Harrogate mum has spoken of her excitement at being chosen to appear as a contestant on MasterChef.

HR Project Manager Olayemi ‘Yemi’ Adelekan, 51, will show off her culinary skills on the popular BBC cooking show tonight at 8pm.

The married mum who has two children says she “loves cooking”. She grew up in Nigeria and has lived in Harrogate for the past nine years.

She told her Facebook followers:

“This is such an incredible and amazing opportunity for me and I’m so excited to go on this journey.

“Let’s just have some fun with food.”

Yemi, who is also a blogger, motivational speaker and author, will champion traditional Nigerian cuisine in the competition. However, her journey from Nigeria to the West Indies in 1995, then to the UK in 1997, has also had a major influence on her cooking style.

Speaking about why she applied to go on MasterChef, she said:

“My boys are now grown up and moved out, so it’s time for new challenges in my life. MasterChef is one of them.”

Tonight’s episode on BBC One kicks off the third week of MasterChef and it is coming up to the halfway point of the heats.

This year the judges are mixing it up. They are introducing a whole new set of challenges that the passionate amateurs must complete to progress in the competition.

Masterchef finalists to launch pop-up restaurant in Harrogate

Two Masterchef quarter finalists are teaming up to launch a Christmas pop-up restaurant in a tipi at a Harrogate hotel.

Jo Mills, from Leeds, who appeared on the BBC cooking show in 2021, met Chris Hale from the 2016 series on a Facebook group for former MasterChef contestants.

The two chefs will take over Cedar Court Hotel’s Tipi on the Stray for two weeks from Thursday, December 9.

Chris, from Wakefield, who runs his own catering company, and helps Masterchef contestants to gain experience in cooking for events, said:

“We just wanted to do something different really in Harrogate.

“I do a lot of pop-up restaurants, so we turn venues, like cathedrals, into restaurants. So the tipi is aligned with what we do. For me it’s not just about the food, it’s about the whole experience. It will feel cosy and relaxed and I’m all about the chill vibes.”

Festive tapas, including turkey and sage bon bons with cranberry dip and mini nut roasts with candied carrots, will be served from 2pm to 10pm from Thursday to Saturday in collaboration with Magic Rock and Harrogate Tipple. On Sunday it’s a two-course bottomless brunch and on Monday to Wednesday, afternoon tea.

Then on December 20, 21 and 22 Afternoon Tea with Elsa, the character from Disney’s Frozen, will take place for families.

Chris said:

“I think we have got a really nice balanced menu. I like tapas because you can get as much or as little as you want.

“The desserts are particularly theatrical. For me it’s the end of the meal, and it’s the bit people take away with them.

“There is an edible Christmas wreath, which is our festive take on an Eton mess, with meringue, ginger, cinnamon, pomegranate and molasses.

“We are also doing a panettone tiramisu garden, which will be presented as a snowy garden scene and will feature meringue mushrooms and edible snow and flowers. Those are the two that are probably the most Instagrammable.”

The December residency will offer additional dining options at the busy hotel and is aimed at Harrogate residents, as well as guests.

The tipi, which can hold up to 38 people, opened on July 4 last year as a result of covid dining restrictions, and has now become a permanent fixture due to its popularity.

Jo, whose passion for tapas has inspired the menu, said:

“Tapas has been my kind of thing or a long time. When friends come over it’s just nice to have one of those sociable ways to eat, so it’s something I have always cooked. We thought it would be fun as it’s a nice casual atmosphere in the tipi. It lends itself really well to that style of dining.”

Masterchef finalist to open new cafe in Harrogate

A Masterchef finalist will open a new cafe in Harrogate this weekend after a successful trial in the town earlier this year.

Matt Healy’s third Scandinavian-inspired Gron Kafe will take over the site of the Quantro restaurant on Royal Parade when it opens on Saturday.

The cafe will serve up pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes. They could be for breakfast, brunch or an afternoon pick-me-up.

It is good timing for the cafe as the nation comes out of lockdown and the Harrogate district moves into tier two restrictions.

Matt had opened a pop-up at the Cold Bath Clubhouse earlier this year, where Paradise Tap and Taco have recently taken over.

With the success of that trial, Gron Kafe has been able to move into its own dedicated site on Royal Parade.

When the cafe opens on Saturday it will serve pancakes, smoothie bowls, vegan mac and cheese, healthy smoothies, coffee, alcohol and more.

Chef Matt Healy, who rose to fame in 2016 as a Masterchef finalist, said:

“There’s something for everyone. Whether you’re after a post-workout refuel, grabbing snacks for the school run, or you’re craving pancakes and strong coffee after a few too many tipples last night.

“We couldn’t miss an opportunity to snap up an amazing spot in the heart of Harrogate.

“It’s been a lot of work transforming it into our new home but we’re looking forward to being a part of the thriving food and drink scene here.”

The new venture follows in the footsteps of Grön in Leeds and York, which have given the team the confidence to expand into Harrogate.

Masterchef finalist to open healthy cafe in Harrogate

Coronavirus may have delayed the plans but Masterchef Matt Healy will open his third healthy cafe in Harrogate next week.

Grön Kafé will open on Monday, June 15 at Cold Bath Clubhouse, 46 King’s Road with a pop up site to sell groceries.

The cafe will have a focus on “keeping it clean” by serving up vegan and allergy-friendly food and drinks as well as the regular favourites.

It will offer Buddha Bowls and ‘croissant-wiches’ along with coffee, freshly-baked pastries, and cakes.

The Grön Kafé will operate as takeaway only for the time being until the government lifts the restrictions on cafes and restaurants.

As well as the cafe, they will open up a pop-up greengrocer which they say was a huge hit at the Leeds site.

The Grön Grocer will stock essentials like fruit and vegetable boxes, flour, milk, and bread.

Chef Patron Matt Healy and Masterchef finalist said he was looking forward to opening in Harrogate:

“We’ve been able to bring a little slice of normality with our Grön Grocer concept. Being able to grab a cracking flat white and a pastry has made people’s day, so we’re looking forward to bringing that to Harrogate. It’s been a tough but exciting journey adapting to the ‘new normal’. It’s been in the works for a long time, and whilst this isn’t how we expected to open, we can’t wait to get stuck in.”
