Ripon Amateur Operatic Society is finally set to stage Oliver! after a two-year wait and behind the scenes dramas.
The award-winning musical will be staged at Harrogate Theatre from April 20 to 23.
The production was delayed by covid and thrown into some doubt, when RAOS could not contact Crewe-based rights holder MusicScope, to whom a £500 deposit had been paid to secure the rights for the show.
RAOS committee member Hannah Ruddy told the Stray Ferret:
“Over more than a year, we attempted to contact them via the telephone number and email address that is on their website. I made dozens of phone calls and sent at least 15 emails, but there has been no response.
“We even sought legal advice, because without the rights we were facing the prospect of having to call off the show, as well as being out of pocket.”
The Stray Ferret has also attempted to contact MusicScope via the telephone number and email address on their website and, at the time of publication, had not received a response.

Hannah Ruddy says the show will go on despite hold-ups and a financial blow.
In the difficult position it was facing, RAOS contacted MTI, which owns the rights to a newer version of Oliver! and following an initial refusal, the application for the rights to perform the musical was finally approved after weeks of negotiations.
Ms Ruddy said:
“MTI were clearly sympathetic to our situation. We even sent them a picture of the cast and highlighted the fact that these kids had already had so much taken away from them over the pandemic.
“We just wanted them to have something to look forward to and know all the hard work they’d put in hadn’t been for nothing.”
Two-year wait
RAOS, which holds its rehearsals at Ripon Arts Hub, was originally due to stage its production of Oliver! at Harrogate Theatre in April 2020.
Following the first covid lockdown, the show was rescheduled for September 2021. However, Harrogate Borough Council’s need to carry out urgent roof repairs at the Victorian building meant that the show could not go on last year.
Ms Ruddy said:
“Now, we’ve got fingers crossed that we are third time lucky and there are no last-minute dramas. Advance ticket sales are good and we hope that our supporters in Ripon, Harrogate and across the district, will come to enjoy the show.”

Ripon Amateur Operatic Society prepares to raise the curtains
Ripon Amateur Operatic Society is raring to reopen its improved, new look theatre after an 18-month closure.
The society received grants from an Aviva Community Fund scheme and Arts Council England totalling more than £80,000 during the pandemic.
The funding has enabled Ripon Operatic Hall to be renovated with improved accessibility, which will be further enhanced when a wheelchair lift is fitted in the coming months.
The actors are now eager to get back under the lights and the first performance back will be the youth group’s We Will Rock You from July 21.

The society’s theatre on Allhallowgate has become a community asset, with a range of groups including baby ballet and zumba also using the space.
Committee member and performer Linda Aikman said:
“Lockdown affected us enormously because we’re performers and it’s what we love to do.
“The money means we have a safe space to put on our shows. It’s now a place for everyone, it was really important for the committee to make sure the theatre is somewhere everyone can enjoy.”

The society staged numerous shows before the pandemic.
Its performance of Oliver! has been rescheduled for the third time and will now be performed at Harrogate Theatre in April 2022.
Ripon Opera Society will be back for more with OliverRipon Amateur Operatic Society, is determined that its show will go on.
The society, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, was due to stage ‘Oliver’ at Harrogate Theatre – a major production that would have brought much-needed revenue to support other activities.
Committee member Hannah Ruddy, told The Stray Ferret:
“We were due to have a four-day run at Harrogate Theatre in April and eight weeks beforehand had sold 40 percent of the tickets for our performances – a very healthy position to be in two months ahead of the opening curtain, but then COVID-19 meant that we had to postpone.”
Harrogate Theatre, itself in lockdown, announced last week that it had raised £40,000 in an emergency fundraising campaign and has agreed alternative dates next April, when the society, will be able to come back once more with its ‘Oliver’ production.
The society, which moved to its new base in Allhallowgate, Ripon in 2015, where there is a maximum seating capacity of 120, has been staging its major productions at Harrogate Theatre for many years. It had other fundraising activities cancelled, including an 80th anniversary dinner scheduled for next month, so the search is on for other funding sources.
The fingers of members are tightly crossed in the hope that the lockdown will have eased sufficiently later this year, for the musical ‘Chicago’ be staged between 23rd and 29th November at the Allhallowgate venue.
To off-set the cost of holding eight performances over seven days, a fundraising page has been set up at www.gofundme.com/f/ripon-operatic-society for anybody wishing to make a donation.
In addition to looking forward to the re-start of rehearsals and future performances, the society is in the process of making its Allhallowgate base a community arts hub, providing a rare space in the city that other performing and artistic groups can use.
Hannah pointed out:
“Though we have been temporarily held up in our plans, I think about Oliver and the first line of the musical, which asks: ‘Is it worth the waiting for?’ and I know that the answer from all of our members is a resounding yes!”
