Not even an amber weather warning could stop the Stray Ferret Business Awards in March, with a turnout of nearly 400 people and many smiling faces, we’re looking forward to doing it all again in 2024.

Following the success of our inaugural event, the Stray Ferret Business Awards will be making its return next year – and we’re ready to receive your entries!

A person has been injured after being struck by a car in Ripon city centre.

The incident happened on Fishergate this morning and the extent of the injuries is not yet known.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:

“Shortly after 11.30am today, police received a call from the ambulance service reporting that a person has been hit by a vehicle on Fishergate in Ripon.

“Officers are currently at the scene of the incident.”

North Yorkshire Police urged anyone with information to get in touch. The incident number is NYP-01092023-0161.

People living in the Harrogate district, particularly in Ripon, have been urged to keep doors and ground floor windows locked following a spate of sneak-in burglaries.

A message on North Yorkshire Community Messaging said three incidents had been reported in Ripon over the last few days.

A sneak-in burglary occurs when a door or window has not been locked and an offender chances their luck by trying handles or windows to gain entry.

If they find something to be unlocked, they sneak in and steal items.

Alison Swan, of North Yorkshire Police, said:

“Please be sure to secure doors and ground floor windows particularly at night, also consider locking doors during the day especially if you are in rear gardens where you are not able to monitor your front door.”

The focus turned to Kirkgate and Minster Gardens yesterday, as Ripon’s extended weekend of Bank Holiday entertainment continued with a fiesta of food and live music.

Saturday had seen fairground rides and a concert featuring tribute acts on Market Square, in the last large-scale public event of the summer staged by Ripon City Council and paid for from the parish precept.

Sunday and Monday brought a Little Bird Artisan market to the square and yesterday, independent businesses in the city, with administrative support from Ripon BID, joined forces for the second Bank Holiday street party of the year.

Kirkgate closed to traffic and an al fresco dining and entertainment from the junction with Duck Hill to Minster Road.

In the evening the party moved to Minster Gardens, where there was a paella picnic, including performances from violin virtuoso Nadia and guitar duo Bailey Brown (pictured below).

Richard Hughes, owner of the Manchega Tapas Restaurant, who was one of the organisers of yesterday’s event told the Stray Ferret:

“This shows what can be achieved when independent businesses come together and stage events that are designed to attract more visitors and local residents onto the city’s streets.”

“Working alongside Ripon BID, the council  and all other interested parties in Ripon, we are looking to build on this success, with the aim of doing even more next year, with the objective of making the city a must-visit destination.”

A 59-year-old man has died following a collision on the A61 between Ripley and South Stainley last weekend.

North Yorkshire Police said the crash happened at 5.20pm on Saturday, August 26.

Three cars were involved in the collision, including a dark coloured Suzuki Bandit Motorcycle, a dark coloured Land Rover Discovery and a white Ford Transit Van.

The rider of the motorcycle, a 59-year-old man, died.

Police said the man’s family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

The driver of the Land Rover Discovery and the Ford Transit both stopped at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.

Officers believe that the motorcyclist was travelling with a group of unknown motorcycles immediately before the collision and he was at the rear of the group.

The road was closed for several hours to allow officers to conduct investigation work at the scene of the collision.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said:

“We’re appealing for information and witnesses following a fatal collision on the A61 over the weekend.

“We’re now appealing to anyone who may have seen the collision or who may have any dashcam footage of the collision or the vehicles prior to the incident, to come forward.

“Anyone with any information or footage is urged to preserve the footage and contact us on 101 quoting reference 12230161248.

Hundreds of people gathered on Ripon Market Square yesterday for the last large-scale public event of the summer organised by the city council.

Families with children from tots to teenagers came early in the  afternoon to ride the Ferris wheel and roundabout, both of which proved a constant draw until dusk, when tribute acts took centre stage in front of the town hall.

Evening entertainment was provided by tribute acts playing the hits of Neil Diamond, Elton John and Robbie Williams, while the Big Boyband Reunion, played a selection of the chart-topping songs made famous by leading boy bands.

The crowd on Market Square steadily grew throughout the evening.

One of the concert highlights came when the Neil Diamond lookalike and soundalike sang Sweet Caroline, the adopted anthem of the England women’s football team.

Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me rang out before sunset arrived and at 9pm Allison Clark, a member of the Ripon hornblower team (pictured below) provided a reminder of the city’s ancient roots, by performing the nightly setting of the watch ceremony, which has reputedly been carried out  without break for more than eleven hundred years.

More free Bank Holiday entertainment

The free family-focused entertainment continues in Ripon on Monday, with a street party in Kirkgate from 11am until 4pm and a Spanish-themed fiesta on Minster Gardens from 5pm until 9.30pm.

Organised by independent businesses in the city as part of the Totally Locally initiative developed with Ripon BID, the Bank Holiday event will see the closure of Kirkgate from 9am.

A woman has been given a suspended sentence for intentional strangulation and criminal damage in Harrogate.

Angela Freebury, 44, appeared before York Crown Court for sentencing yesterday (August 24).

She admitted strangling the named victim on Harewood Road in Harrogate on September 23 last year.

Ryan Donoghue, prosecuting, told the court that Freebury, who was intoxicated, had asked the victim for a cigarette but was refused.

The 44-year-old, whose address was given as Blossomgate, Ripon, then went back to her room and proceeded to be verbally aggressive from her window.

The victim began recording on her mobile phone, Mr Donoghue said.

He added:

“Twenty minutes later, the defendant returned downstairs.

“The complainant was recording. The defendant took it from her hand and threw it on the ground.”

Mr Donoghue said Freebury then took the victim by the throat with her left hand and compressed, which an eye witness said lasted for between five and 10 seconds.

The victim had to push Freebury in the chest to get her to let go, the prosecution added.

She was arrested, but offered no comment when questioned by police.

Mr Donoghue told the court that the attack was “sustained and repeated”.

The defence said Freebury had a “number of problems” that she is “quite clearly unable to deal with”.

Judge Sean Morris sentenced her to a 10 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months.

Freebury was also ordered to undertake 30 rehabilitation days.

BT Group has revealed plans to remove two payphones from rural locations near Ripon.

The company has applied to North Yorkshire Council for planning permission to take away phone boxes in Grantley and Winksley.

According to planning documents submitted in support of the application, the Winksley phone box has not been used for any calls in the last 12 months, while the one in Grantley has been used five times.

People have 90 days to object to the plans.

Planning documents say communities can also apply to adopt phone boxes and transform their use. They add:

“Thousands of boxes have been reinvented as cafes, mini-libraries and defibrillator sites. Communities can adopt most red boxes for just £1.”

The deadline for making representations to BT is November 20.

Ripon nursery Busy Bees has retained its ‘good’ rating by Ofsted.

The government inspector said in a report published this week the nursery on Kearsley Road provided a “safe and nurturing environment” where “children are happy, motivated and keen to learn”.

The report said leaders “create an ambitious curriculum that staff follow and implement well” and staff “have high expectations for children’s behaviour”.

It added:

“Children behave well and are kind and considerate to their friends. Staff provide good support to help them understand how to manage their own behaviour.

“For example, they teach children who struggle with their emotions to use deep breathing strategies to help them feel calm.

However, Ofsted said the nursery’s ample outdoor resources were “not as stimulating as indoors for children to extend their learning through play” and “occasionally, not all parents and carers are fully involved in their children’s learning”.

The inspection, which took place on July 17, was the first since 2019, which also rated the nursery as ‘good’.

Busy Bees is the UK’s largest nursery group, with almost 400 nurseries.
