Knaresborough’s first health and beauty week begins today.

Sixteen businesses are involved in the venture, which runs from April 22 to Sunday, April 28.

It is one of many events being organised this year by Knaresborough Business Collective.

The collective was set up by independent traders Natalie Horner and Annie Wilkinson-Gill in 2021. The health and beauty week has been created to showcase Knaresborough’s beauty venues.

The event follows the Knaresborough Business Collective’s first week of exclusive offers, Knaresborough food and drink week, in March.

Similar to the food and drink week, the beauty event will give people cut-price deals throughout the week. Salons, clinics and wellness shops will have a range of exclusive offers, many of which are yet to be announced.

In an interview with the Stray Ferret, prior to the Knaresborough food and drink week, Ms Horner said:

“There are so many amazing businesses in Knaresborough it is just a case of showcasing what we have to offer and drawing people in.

“We have launched to event to show what is on offer in Knaresborough, sometimes people get stuck in a routine and need to be shown what options they have. Sometimes people don’t realise these places even exist, so it helps to put them on the map.

“All the businesses are so different they have lots to offer and we had to make sure there was a mutual benefit.”

The collective has also revealed plans to run another event, a retail week in the run-up to the Knaresborough Business Awards in summer.

Deals for this week will be updated daily and shared to the Knaresborough Business Collective Facebook page. Participating businesses will also put posters in their windows.

Hair salon to open in Harrogate after £50,000 refurbishment

A new hair salon will open in Harrogate next week.

Charlotte Woolley Hairdressing, which is located on John Street, will offer traditional hair services including cuts, colours and hair-up services.

Owner Charlotte Woolley has 20 years of hairdressing experience under her belt and hopes the salon will bring “the ultimate salon experience”.

She told the Stray Ferret she wants the salon to be known particularly for its blow-dries.

She said:

“I’m so excited about it opening.”

“I think there’s a gap in the market for luxury hairdressing here in Harrogate.”

The unit is located in the former art gallery Bills and Rye. Ms Woolley said renovations, which began in August, have cost around £50,000.

Charlotte Woolley Hairdressing will open on Wednesday, November 1.

It will be open Tuesday to Saturday.

Jobs on offer with growing brand for hairdressers who listen

A hairdressing brand due to open new beauty rooms in Harrogate this month is looking to recruit more staff across all its branches. 

Allertons’ flagship salon is the highest rated in Leeds, and it also has concessions in John Lewis stores in Leeds and Nottingham, with a third due to open in Southampton in November. The Harrogate salon is due to open its brand-new beauty rooms by the end of October. 

The company currently has 19 vacancies for hairdressers and beauticians, as well as six client concierge roles.

Allertons gives 30% of the profit generated for the company to the person who generated it, so a good hairdresser can earn up to £40,000 a year. 

In addition, employees receive health insurance, funded training on new techniques and equipment, free hairdressing and treatments, and a ‘friends and family’ discount. Those working in one of the concessions also get discount at John Lewis. 

Nick said it was important that candidates were able to ditch their ego and maintain an “old school” approach to customer service: 

“Some salons promote certain personalities above others. That’s not us – we want to take a sledgehammer to all of that. We’re not about ego and flashiness, which is why we get on so well with John Lewis. 

“We want to debunk that image of the hairdresser who judges clients and thinks they know best what their client should have. People come to us because we listen when they tell us what they want. We’re not fashion and trend-led – we’re 100% customer-led.”

New beauty salon opens in Knaresborough

A new hair and beauty salon has opened its doors in Knaresborough.

Boujeé, which began operating at 47 High Street this month, offers a range of beauty and aesthetic treatments.

The salon was founded by friends Natasha Daniel, Natasha Peacock and Tanya Maynard.

The three said they set up the venture in the hope of offering a “warm welcoming atmosphere” for clients.

Ms Daniel said:

“We’re just three local girls that have been friends for years and worked in the industry collectively for over 10 years, so have a wealth of experience.

“We worked in local salons separately for many years and thought we’d club together and bring you a luxury experience that we thrive in, we are perfectionists with a passion to give the best service and warm welcoming atmosphere.”

She added the firm has retained some of its existing clients and hoped to add new ones in the future.

The salon is among a range of businesses to have opened in the town recently, including the Knaresborough Inn and 1858 Restaurant and Bar.

New salon opens in Harrogate as longstanding one bids farewell

A new salon will open in Harrogate on Tuesday — days after a longstanding one closes.

Charles Hanson, a unisex salon, will welcome customers in Westminster Arcade on Parliament Street.

Owner Marcus Charles Hanson was previously style director at Dangerfield & Keane on Harrogate’s Cold Bath Road, which will close tomorrow after 15 years.

Several staff at Dangerfield & Keane, including owner Gerri Dangerfield, are involved in the new venture.

Mr Hanson said:

“For my entire hairdressing career, I have wanted my own business. From when I was just a Saturday boy to recent months as a manager and trainer with a loyal clientele, telling clients that my dream was to have my own salon.

“I have worked at Dangerfield & Keane in Harrogate with some of the most talented hairstylists and I have watched them progress through their journeys. After watching them its now time to start my own. I cannot wait to open the doors to Charles Hanson.”

Gerri Dangerfield and stylist Gill Hawley-Jefferson are renting chairs in the new salon. Two other Dangerfield & Keane staff have also transferred to Charles Hanson.

Mr Dangerfield announced in May he planned to close the salon “to address my work-life balance and spend more time with my husband, Andrew”.

The business was expected to continue until October but Mr Dangerfield said on Instagram “while this is ahead of our previous schedule, the time is now right for the next move”.

He added:

“We want to assure you that we are all very excited to be moving to the next chapter of our careers and lives.”

Knaresborough salon to hold launch party tomorrow

A Knaresborough salon is holding an official launch party nearly three years after trading began.

Loft, located on Finkle Keep in Knaresborough, began as a lockdown project and opened its doors in late 2020.

Teresa McDowell, who offers laser hair removal treatments at the salon, said the previously derelict building had been transformed into a “quirky and quaint” business.

The salon offers traditional beauty services, such as nails, hair, and massages, as well as aesthetic treatments including Botox and filler. Those that work at the salon are all self-employed.

Ms McDowell said the delayed open day was due to the previous team “not gelling” with one another, but she added the current team was “finally solid” enough to warrant a celebration.

She added:

“We are different to all the other salons in the area.

“The thing I love about the salon is that we don’t follow the trends – we are the trend”.

The open day is free to attend and will include drinks and nibbles, as well as live demonstrations of the services on offer.

Goodie bags will also be available to the first 20 people that attend, as well as discounts for future bookings.

The open day will take place on Saturday, May 27, from 1pm.

Harrogate salon to close after 15 years

Harrogate hair and beauty salon Dangerfield and Keane is to close after 15 years.

Owner Gerri Dangerfield announced the news on social media today, saying he “needed to address my work-life balance and spend more time with my husband, Andrew”.

The salon has been a fixture on Cold Bath Road most of this century. Mr Dangerfield, who has been a hairdresser for 49 years, previously managed Saks Hair and Beauty on Parliament Street in Harrogate.

He told the Stray Ferret he was “going out on a high” and intended to stay in the hairdressing profession, adding:

“Everything changes and it’s the right time to move on. We’ve had a great time and this is a positive decision. I’ve been flooded with emails today.”

The salon will continue to operate as normal until October 14.

Mr Dangerfield added style director Marcus Hanson planned to open his own salon in Harrogate, and was in talks with each stylist at Dangerfield and Keane about roles, adding:

“I will almost certainly have a chair with Marcus wherever that may be.”

Explaining his decision to close the business on social media, Mr Dangerfield said:

“As you can imagine the demands of running a business the size of Dangerfield and Keane has not been easy and I now feel the time is right to take advantage of the five-year break clause in our business lease.

“I have served notice to our landlord that Dangerfield and Keane will not continue as a business once we close the current premises on Cold Bath Road on Saturday October 14.

“Although I am 62, I still have a list of things I want to achieve in my life before I retire fully from hairdressing. Retiring from running a large salon is simply the first step.

“I can only express my gratitude to all our loyal clients who have supported us over so many years. I hope I have served you well and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

He added beauty therapist Katy Smith had opened her own treatment room on Westmorland St trading under the name KS Beauty Harrogate.

 

Criminals damage third business on Harrogate’s Cold Bath Road

A salon has become the third business in quick succession to fall victim to criminals on Harrogate’s Cold Bath Road.

Sara Pugh Hairdressing put four mini Christmas trees in plant boxes outside the shop and decorated them with lights to spread seasonal goodwill.

But one tree has been stolen, another uprooted and the lights on all four vandalised.

Charlie Woolley, a stylist at the salon, said her friend alerted her to the damage when she noticed it on her way to work early on Sunday morning. Ms Woolley said:

“It’s just really bad and immoral. Sara does so much for charity and put so much effort into the Christmas display so it looks nice for children on their way to school.

“It’s so sad that people enjoy doing this.”

One tree was uprooted and another was stolen.

Fortunately the giant toy bear outside the shop, which is brought inside at night, was not harmed.

Last month Dangerfield & Keane, another salon just yards from Sara Pugh Hairdressing, had its Christmas lights vandalised for the first time in 14 years.

Days later two thieves smashed their way into  James Barber Tobacconist on the other side of the road closer to town and stole cigars and whiskey.
