Masham steam rally set to return for its 56th year

Masham Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally is set to return this weekend for its 56th year.

The two-day event, which started in the 1960s as a fundraiser to save Masham Town Hall, has become one of the Harrogate district summer highlights.

The event, which is held in the rally field just outside the town, is set to see thousands of people attend.

This year’s event is set to include a range of exhibitors including classic cars, tractors, steam engines and motorbikes.

A grand parade of steam is set to be held on the Saturday, along with Moto Stunts International which will perform a “high octane” stunt show in the arena on both days.

There will also be a funfair, face painting, mini trains and other activities for the family.

Peter Usher, who organises the rally, said:

“There is a huge amount of things going on whether you are a heritage enthusiast or a family of four.

“The location is lovely and frankly it is very good value for money.”

Entry costs £12 for adults, £11 for concessions and £3 for children up to 16. Younger children under five get in for free. A caravan park is available for overnight visitors.

In Pictures and video: Steam engine parade in Masham

Last night Masham market square hosted a parade of steam engines as part of the 2022 Masham Steam Rally.  The event in Marfield Fields returned this weekend after a two year absence due to covid.

Hundreds gathered on a perfect summer evening to see a parade of engines make their way from the rally ground into the centre of town.

These pictures and video try to capture the event but do not do justice to the noise and smell of these fabulous machines — both gigantic and small.

It’s a mucky business messing with steam engines!

Here is our Facebook Live as the engines started to arrive into the town centre..

Lancaster bomber to fly past at Masham steam rally

A Lancaster bomber is to fly past at Masham Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally on Saturday.

The two-day event, which started in the 1960s as a fundraiser to save Masham Town Hall, has become one of the Harrogate district summer highlights.

It returns this weekend after a two-year hiatus due to covid. Several thousand people are expected to attend.

There will be 42 steam engines, dancing diggers, a fairground and lots of other activities in the rally field just outside Masham.

But the highlight will be the Lancaster bomber, which is due to fly past at 1.02pm on Saturday.

The rally was due to have a Dakota fly past on its 50th anniversary but it had to be cancelled due to the weather. This weekend’s forecast, however, is excellent.

Flo Grainger, who has helped to organise the event for 30 years, said:

“It’s another step to getting back to normal and we are all looking forward to the event returning. We are very lucky to have the Lancaster.”

Entry costs £12 for adults, £7 for concessions and £3 for children over five. Younger children get in for free. A caravan park is available for overnight visitors.
