Plans have been submitted to install 12 electric vehicle charging points at Wetherby Services.
Gridserve, a sustainable energy firm in Kirk Deighton, has applied to North Yorkshire Council for the scheme just off junction 46 of the A1(M).
Gridserve was granted planning permission in November 2021 to alter the service station car park to create an electric vehicle charging hub for 24 vehicles. The application also included the creation of 17 additional car parking spaces in a new parking area.
The hub was completed in July 2022 but is not yet in use.
The new proposal, which appeared on the council website this week, has downsized the scheme to 12 charging spaces — half as many as the previous application — and no longer includes a new parking area.
Gridserve is also seeking permission to install electrical equipment that would enable the charging bays to be activated.
The company said in a letter to the council:
“The development is similar to that previously granted permission at the site, but at a smaller scale and with the addition of detailed specification of supporting electrical infrastructure to allow operation of existing and future chargers.”

The letter adds:
“Gridserve is implementing and building a network of high-power chargers across the country that will provide UK motorists with fast, easy and low carbon charging solutions.
“Many will be located at existing destinations such retail parks and garden centres and will allow customers to use those amenities whilst being able to access dependable charging infrastructure.”
It added the government had a target to deliver at least six high powered EV chargers at every motorway service area across England by 2023.
The charging bays will be situated at the most northerly area of the car park, next to to the Days Inn hotel.
Man arrested and £100,000 seized after A1 Boroughbridge police chase
A 30-year-old man has been arrested and £100,000 of cash seized after a police chase on the A1 near Boroughbridge.
North Yorkshire Police were alerted to erratic driving southbound near to Scotch Corner yesterday at 1.50pm.
Officers located the vehicle which near Dishforth and followed it towards Boroughbridge.
As they approached Wetherby Services, police got in front of the vehicle and directed the driver to leave the carriageway into the service station.
As they got nearer to the services, the driver made off and drove at speed through the service station car park towards the hotel at the back of the site, colliding with a member of the public’s vehicle on its way through.
A police statement said:
“Officers pursued on foot and within four minutes of running from the car, the suspect had been located by officers with the support of a police dog. He was arrested for failing to stop when instructed and handcuffed.
“A search of his vehicle uncovered a substantial amount of cash estimated to be around £100,000 and two large tubs of plant food. The driver also failed a roadside drug test, testing positive for cocaine.”

The 30-year-old, of no fixed abode, was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police.
He was also arrested on suspicion of drug driving and on suspicion of being in possession of criminal property, dangerous driving, driving otherwise than accordance with a licence, failing to stop after a road traffic accident, money laundering, theft of a motor vehicle and for driving without insurance.
The man remains in custody while police enquiries continue.
Man charged with drink driving after lorry crashes near Wetherby ServicesA lorry driver has been charged with drink-driving after he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the central reservation of the A1(M) near Harrogate.
The Scania heavy goods vehicle was heading south on the road when the incident happened at 10.25pm on Friday.
It crashed into the barrier about half-a-mile before junction 46 near Wetherby Services.
The lorry blocked the middle and outer lanes until it was recovered at 1am on Saturday.
North Yorkshire Police and National Highways managed traffic past the scene during the recovery operation and collision investigation.
The 25-year-old driver, from Cahersiveen, Ireland, was arrested and later charged with driving whilst unfit through drink — according to police, a road-side test found him to be more than double the legal limit for alcohol.
He was also charged with driving without due care and attention and will appear before Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on 17 February 2022, 10am, court room 1.
