£50,000 Knaresborough play area makeover to begin in November
Mint Garth play area in Knaresborough’s Hay a Park Estate is set to undergo a £50,000 makeover.
It has been announced by Knaresborough Town Council this week that works to the play area will begin in November.
The upgraded play area is set to see new a new climbing frame, slides, swings and a new accessible picnic bench.
Earlier this year North Yorkshire Council announced it was working alongside the Town Council to improve the quality of the playground.
A survey was launched in January to gather residents’ opinions and decide the most suitable design for the play area.
It closed in March and the consultation report was used to create a wish list for the design brief.
North Yorkshire Council previously said that the play area currently lacked a good range of play equipment for a wide age range of users.
The council added that there was a lot of unused space which could “benefit from some up-to-date play equipment.”
A total of £50,000 has been allocated to the project, which will be funded by section 106 money.
Section 106 funds are paid to the council by developers to mitigate for the infrastructure requirements of their schemes.
Knaresborough’s Mint Garth play area design
Knaresborough Town Council announced the decision to upgrade the play area on social media this week.
A statement from the town council said:
Councillor Andy Bell is happy to share that after a competitive tendering process run by North Yorkshire Council a supplier and design has been selected to refresh the Mint Garth play area located on the Hay a Park estate. Work will start in early November.
The new design makes much better use of the space and has a lot of new play equipment aimed at younger children.
This is being funded by Section 106 money that came from the developer of the estate in 2007 and is not connected to the new Water Lane plans. This money had to be spent specifically on Mint Garth play area and would have gone back to the developer if not spent.
