The news that they’d won the Stray Ferret’s first subscriber giveaway couldn’t have come at a better time for Julie and Ronnie McKay.

Their beloved black labrador Dexter had just passed away, and they'd been thinking about taking a break for the first time since he'd been too old for them to leave him.

But when a message appeared in their inbox saying they’d won a short stay at an Inn Collection hotel, they initially thought it was spam. Ronnie said:

We didn’t believe it. We were going into Harrogate anyway, so decided to drop by the Stray Ferret office and check it out. It was a welcome surprise.

As a subscriber, Julie had automatically been entered into our new monthly giveaway.

She was randomly selected as August’s winner of a short stay for two in any of the Inn Collection’s hotels.

The couple, who have only lived in the north of England for about 18 months, have chosen to stay at The Amble Inn in the Lake District – an area they have yet to discover.

Originally from Southampton, they moved to Ferrensby in 2022 to be nearer their daughter, a teacher at Coppice Valley Primary School in Harrogate, and young grandson, who live in Leeds.

News, lifestyle and events

Julie first heard about the Stray Ferret when founder Tamsin O’Brien gave a talk to the Farm Women’s Club in Arkendale, where Julie is a member. She said:

I was impressed by the fact that it’s a local business and she has worked very hard to establish it. I thought I would support it.

She and Ronnie enjoy catching up on the latest local news. They also like reading about events and ideas for places to visit as they continue to explore the Harrogate and Knaresborough area. Julie added:

It’s a wonderful source of local news, with interesting articles and lifestyle features. It’s a good way for us to find out what’s going on.

Subscribe and win

Subscribers to the Stray Ferret get access to a range of discounts and offers from local businesses. They are also automatically entered each month into our subscriber giveaway, which features a different prize each time.
