Editor's Pick of the Week: Blocked drains and anger at Great Yorkshire Showground ban

Storm Éowyn caused travel disruption this week amid strong winds — but another story caught the eye on the Stray Ferret this week.

At about 8am on January 16 near Timble in the Washburn Valley, police attended a six-car pile up on a country road leading to Fewston Reservoir.

Two of the cars overturned and another ended up on the bonnet of one of the others. Only one minor injury was reported. You can see the dramatic pictures in our story here.

But who is to blame? North Yorkshire Police said a blocked drain that the council knew about was to blame. However, the council said it was possible the capacity of the gully could have been affected following surface water run-off from the surrounding land following the snowmelt.

One suspects that this will not be the end of this particular story.

Meanwhile, commercial dog walkers in Harrogate have been left angry following an “unfair and unnecessary” decision at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

The Stray Ferret was alerted to signs banning the practice following a phone call from a reader on Thursday morning.

We went down to investigate and speak to some dog walkers, who told us that they felt the decision was wrong.

However, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which owns the showground, said some commercial users had verbally abused other dog walkers and let their dogs attack other animals.

It stressed other dog walkers were still welcome to use the showground's footpaths and bridleways.

Regardless, the decision has left some walkers in disbelief.
