North Yorkshire Council looks set to bid for funding for a new path between Green Hammerton and Thorpe Underwood.

The Hammerton Greenway, which has an estimated cost of £84,600, aims to provide a safe route for cycling and walking in the villages.

The 1.6-mile all weather track links Water Slack Lane in Green Hammerton with Moss Hill Lane in Thorpe Underwood.

Green Hammerton Parish Council began work on the project after the 2014 Tour de France passed through the area.

Since then, the parish council has secured planning permission to change the use of land to facilitate the greenway and started construction of the scheme.

Now, North Yorkshire Council plans to include the project in a submission to the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire’s active travel fund.

The council intends to bid for £1.2 million from the fund, which would be broken down into four schemes.

One is a list of eight 'minor improvement' initiatives which total £458,477. The Hammerton Greenway is included in this.

The other three projects are:

  • £220,171 Skipton accessibility package
  • £264,000 For automatic number plate recognition camers at school streets locations
  • £554,306 Skipton Canal towpath upgrade

According to a council report, the greenway submission would be for a “new shared use path”.

The report said:

The schemes that are recommended to be submitted for delivery using the mayor's active travel fund will help North Yorkshire Council to deliver on local, regional and national priorities.

It will improve safety and accessibility, deliver economic and health benefits as well as help to deliver an improved active travel network.

Cllr Arnold Warneken, who represents Ouseburn on North Yorkshire Council, said construction on the greenway has stalled in recent weeks due to bad weather.

However, he said the project should be complete in April.

Cllr Warneken said:

It has been halted due to the bad weather. But the bridleway and bridge are in place.

When the weather improves, it will be another six weeks [until completion].

A decision on the council’s active travel submission will be made at a meeting on Friday (February 27).
