Last Friday, July 26, marked the start of the Paris Olympic Games 2024, one of the greatest celebrations of sport – and the Harrogate district will be watching along closely with the rest of the UK.

Yorkshire has produced some outstanding competitors over the years, and the representation this year is just as impressive.

Not only has the news team at the Stray Ferret compiled a round-up of Olympic hopefuls in the region so you don’t have to miss a moment, but we’ve also managed to land several exclusive interviews with members of Team GB, such as eventing coach Chris Bartle, paralympic powerlifter Charlotte McGuinness and runner George Mills.

Switching focus to this side of the Channel, we’ve also ensured that we were across all the latest news in the district.

Part of that responsibility is making sure we’re visible in the communities we serve, out and about speaking to residents, attending events and covering breaking stories.

Last Wednesday, our news reporter Flora was first to the scene of the violent incident on Nidderdale Greenway, and we have provided regular updates on the case since.

After the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith announced up to £10 million of high street funding, we went to Knaresborough to speak to businesses about how they’d like to see the money spent.

It was a busy week for Ripon’s local politics; we reported on the concerns raised by councillors following the proposed plan to restrict traffic speed on the A61 between Ripon and Ripley.

We also reported on how the new Labour government’s defence review may affect the 1,300-home Clotherholme development plans, and the retention of Claro Barracks as a military base.

Our in-depth features covered a broad range of subject matters last week.

We started a two-part investigative series on the companies that the council owns, and how much they actually benefit taxpayers, the second instalment of which is due to be published this week.

There were two important milestone reached in Harrogate recently that we highlighted, the first being our two-part interview with Simon Weaver to mark his 15th anniversary of managing Harrogate Town.

We also caught up with walking tour guide Harry Satloka on his charity cycle ride from Harrogate to Cairo, to find out where he is in the world – and how the journey is going so far.

Finally, it's shaping up to be a beautiful week of weather across the Harrogate district - subscribers can take advantage of our fantastic offer with Piccolino and soak in the warmth from their sun terrace, while enjoying 15% discount and an arrival drink on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Don’t miss out on quality local news in the district - by subscribing for just £4.99 a month or £49.99 annually, you will be able to access all daily news, in-depth features and lifestyle content as well as a whole range of fantastic exclusive discounts and offers.
