Watch a Boxing Day tradition

Every Boxing Day, the banks of the River Nidd at Knaresborough’s Low Bridge burst into life for the town’s long-running Tug of War tradition.

Two rival pubs – the Half Moon Free House and Mother Shipton Inn – face off from opposite sides of the river, with men’s and women’s teams pulling for victory.

What started as a bit of festive fun has become a beloved local custom spanning more than 50 years, drawing big crowds who gather to watch the action and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

In recent years, the event has also helped raise funds for local charities, adding an extra layer of community spirit to this much-loved Boxing Day ritual.

Don’t miss out – head down and watch it on December 26.

Free, 12 noon, December 26, Low Bridge on the River Nidd, Knaresborough, HG5.

Walk off the festive haze

After the busy holiday feasting, one of the best ways to unwind is to lace up your boots and head out for a crisp winter walk in the countryside.

Whether you walk part of the Harrogate Ringway, stroll beside the River Nidd through Nidd Gorge, or follow the riverside route between Harrogate and Knaresborough, local walks offer a much-needed refreshing burst of fresh air at this time of year.

A gentle stroll can clear your head and reconnect you with nature, while a more challenging hike gets the endorphins pumping – either way, you’ll have earned a warming drink and a mince pie afterwards.

Retrace the footsteps of Fountains Abbey’s founders

Go on the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal pilgrimage this Boxing Day.

It is a cherished annual tradition, retracing the route first walked in 1132 by the 13 monks who founded Fountains Abbey in Ripon.

The day begins with a Eucharist service at Ripon Cathedral before attendees step out on a four-mile journey through peaceful countryside and woodland paths, eventually arriving at the National Trust’s Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal.

There, in the atmospheric cellarium, participants gather for carols and a simple service, transforming the ancient ruins into a place of warmth, reflection and shared community spirit.

Free, starts at 9.30am, with the walk departing around 10.15am, arriving at Fountains Abbey for a 12 noon carol service in the cellarium, with free entry to the abbey for participants until noon.
