Discover two of Yorkshire’s top cookery schools, from hands-on classes at Swinton Cookery School in Ripon to bespoke experiences at The Learning Larder in York.

Find out about how you can learn cooking techniques, explore seasonal ingredients and enjoy immersive culinary experiences for all skill levels.

Swinton Cookery School

Nestled on the Swinton Estate, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Swinton Cookery School offers a relaxed, hands-on experience for anyone eager to explore the art of cooking. Housed in a converted Georgian stable wing adjacent to Swinton Park Hotel, the school combines the charm of a historic setting with modern, well-equipped facilities, making it an inspiring destination for culinary enthusiasts of all levels.

The school runs a busy programme of half-day and full-day practical classes throughout the year, designed to suit beginners and seasoned cooks alike. From classic baking and traditional Sunday roasts, which teach participants how to create some well-loved classics, to South-East Asian flavours and French brasserie dishes bringing regional flavours and techniques to the kitchen, each course focuses on skill development, creativity, and confidence in the kitchen.

For those wondering how the best restaurants create exceptional sauces, Great Stocks & Sauces teaches the secrets behind the perfect sauces. Alternatively, the Beginners' course is ideal for those just getting started in the kitchen. Small class sizes ensure personal attention from experienced tutors, making every session interactive and enjoyable.

Chef-tutor Ian Matfin runs Swinton Cookery School, hailing from many prestigious restaurants, including Claridge’s Hotel London, Abode Manchester by Michael Caines, the Devonshire Arms Bolton Abbey, and Terry Laybourne’s 21 Queen Street.

A standout feature of Swinton Cookery School is its use of sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. The four-acre walled garden behind the hotel – one of the UK’s largest working hotel kitchen gardens – provides 62 varieties of fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs, while the wider Estate contributes high-quality venison, rabbit, and other seasonal produce. This estate-to-plate approach allows students to experience cooking with the very best ingredients, learning not just techniques but also the importance of seasonality and sustainability.

Swinton Cookery School also offers children’s courses during school holidays, giving young chefs the chance to develop practical skills in a fun, hands-on environment. These courses are designed to be engaging and educational, helping children gain confidence in the kitchen while exploring a variety of recipes and techniques. Families can enjoy the opportunity to cook together, creating memories that extend beyond the classroom.

Beyond the kitchen, the Swinton Estate itself enhances the experience. Guests can explore the beautiful walled gardens, wander through the Deer Park, or enjoy the tranquil surroundings of the Estate before or after their class. For those staying overnight at Swinton Park Hotel, cookery classes can be combined with indulgent afternoon tea, excellent dining, and luxurious accommodation, creating a full culinary retreat in the heart of Yorkshire.

Children’s courses start at £60; adult half-day courses start at £120. Swinton Cookery School is based in Ripon at Swinton Park, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 4JH.
