Harrogate Town have announced their 14th and 15th signings of the season.
Brentford under-23s defender, Chanse Headman, and Newcastle United reserve team captain, Cathal Heffernan, have both joined the Sulphurites on 18-month contracts.
Headman, 20, joined The Bees in February 2023 from Walton & Hersham, and developed into a key figure in the Premier League club’s B team.
The 6ft 4ins defender spent last month on loan at Maidenhead, scoring his first professional goal against Hampton & Richmond.
He said:
I'm only 20, but I'm never someone that will back down from a challenge, I'm someone that will face it and be ready to learn at every point in my life.
I can't wait to get started, I'm looking to learn a lot more from the boys, from the gaffer and everyone else here. I just want to get playing now and keep the club in the league they deserve to be in.
Head of player recruitment, Lloyd Kerry, said:
At 20 years old, we think he is mentally ready and physically ready to come in, compete in League Two and make a big impact. Injuries have left us a little light at centre half so when we the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer and we’re excited by what he can bring.
He’s really mobile and we like all the attributes he's got, he has shown in a short spell at Maidenhead that in men's football that he can really compete physically.
Chanse takes the number 16 shirt at Town and is available for their trip to Shrewsbury on Saturday (January 17), subject to FA and EFL approval.
Born in Cork, Heffernan began his career with Ringmahon Rangers, before moving to Cork City in 2019.
He also trained with Juventus, Roma, Atalanta and AC Milan, with the Rossoneri securing the talented defender’s signature, in 2022.
A year later Heffernan would make to move to England and Newcastle United, where he has made over 50 PL2 appearances.
The Republic of Ireland youth international said:
I'm buzzing, It's a massive move for me and my family and will be my first taste of men's football, so I'm just really excited to get going. All the experiences in my career so far have been leading to this moment now, so if I can take all of that and put it together, then I think it'll give me a good shot.
I'm grateful to the club for taking me here, this is a massive opportunity for me and I’m determined to repay the faith. I want to help the team get as many wins as possible and put in as many good performances as I can.
Kerry added:
He's energetic, puts his body on the line, he'll put his head in where it hurts and he's mobile, we like all aspects of his game.
He’s exactly what we’re looking for in a centre half so hopefully he can come in, hit the ground running and push the other lads on as well.
Cathal takes the number 31 shirt at Town and will also be available for their trip to Shrewsbury on Saturday, subject to FA and EFL approval.
A total of 22 players, not including goalkeepers and under-21s, can be registered at any point during the season.
While both players are under 21, Harrogate have 24 players over the age of 21 currently registered. Two players will need to be unregistered or sold for Harrogate to adhere to EFL guidelines.
