The Stray Ferret has been investigating rumours that Greggs could be about to open a store in a Harrogate supermarket café.
Sainsbury's announced last month the café in its superstore on Wetherby Road would close, probably in spring. You can read more here.
It said many shoppers “do not use the cafés regularly" and the move would “simplify the business”.
Rumours have been swirling since that bakery chain Greggs will take over the café when it becomes empty.
The Stray Ferret contacted both Sainsbury's and Greggs to ask if this were true.
A Greggs spokesperson said:
Greggs is always looking into new shop locations. While we are unable to confirm anything at the moment, we will share any information in due course.
In contrast to Greggs' teasing comment, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson played a straighter bat.
They said it had been a "difficult decision" to close the Harrogate store café, adding:
At this time, we do not have an update to share on our Harrogate Café.
We are supporting the colleagues affected in any way we can, including exploring redeployment opportunities and our stores continue to support the customers and communities they serve in a range of ways, including through fundraising, volunteering and donations to good causes.
We will continue to monitor developments. If you have any news on the situation, email us at contact@thestrayferret.co.uk and let us know in the comments section below if you would welcome another Greggs.
