A man and woman have been fined after stealing more than £400 worth of goods from a Sainsbury’s in Harrogate.

Ghorghe Caldaras and Ramona Muntean, both of Hexthorpe in Doncaster, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (March 19) where they admitted theft.

Alison Whiteley, prosecuting, told the court that Caldras, 39, and Muntean, 44, entered Sainsbury’s supermarket on Railway Road on the afternoon of February 28 this year.

The couple then filled a trolley with items such as Red Bull energy drinks, cheese, washing products and coffee and went to the self-checkout, the court heard.

Both Caldaras and Muntean paid for a small amount of the items, but were caught on CCTV leaving the store with a trolley full of goods, Ms Whiteley said.

Ms Whiteley added:

The pair were stopped by security. When they were interviewed, they said they intended to pay for the items. They were shown CCTV of them leaving the store without paying and apologised for their actions.

Ms Whiteley said the pair stole items worth £417 from the store.

She added that the offences had “some planning” as the pair had travelled up from Doncaster to go to the Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The court heard that Caldaras had a police caution for taking a car without owner's consent and Muntean had five previous convictions for theft.

Sean Wilson, defending, said both of the defendants wanted to apologise to the court for the offences.

He added:

They accepted that they committed these offences when interviewed and they want to apologise for their behaviour.

Magistrates fined both Caldaras and Muntean £120 and ordered them to pay court costs of £85 and a victims’ surcharge of £48.
