North Yorkshire Police today said the single-vehicle collision happened on Pot Bank in the Beckwithshaw area at around 10pm.
A blue Citroën C2 left the road and collided with a tree, police said, adding the driver – who has not been named – was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was the only occupant of the car.
The road remained closed until 5am today to allow for an investigation to get underway and for the vehicle to be recovered.
Police are now seeking witnesses and information to assist with the investigation. Today’s statement added:
If you saw the C2 prior to the collision or the collision itself, or have any relevant dashcam footage, please email mcit@northyorkshire.police.uk, or dial 101 and speak to North Yorkshire Police.
