Cllr Zoe Metcalfe, the new mayor, and deputy mayor Cllr Nathan Plowright.

North Yorkshire’s former crime commissioner has taken on a new role as mayor of Boroughbridge.

Zoë Metcalfe served as North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner from November 2021 until May 2024 when the role was abolished.

She succeeded fellow Conservative Philip Allott.

The commissioner's powers transferred to the first ever mayor of York and North Yorkshire in 2024.

During her tenure as commissioner, Ms Metcalfe introduced initiatives to tackle violence against women and girls and improve call-handling times.

Now she has been elected mayor of Boroughbridge.

A mayor-making ceremony was held at a Boroughbridge Town Council meeting last night (May 5).

Announcing the news, Boroughbridge Town Council said:

At the annual meeting of the town council last night Cllr Zoe Metcalfe became the new mayor for 2026-7. Her deputy is Cllr Nathan Plowright.

As she took on her new role, Cllr Zoe offered thanks to the outgoing mayor, Cllr Pauline Phillips, for the hard work and leadership she had given to the post over the last two years.

When Ms Metcalfe’s tenure as commissioner was scrapped, we looked back on her time in post and analysed her performance. You can read that piece here.

Labour’s David Skaith, who was elected the first mayor of York and North Yorkshire two years ago, is now halfway through his term.

The Stray Ferret caught up with him yesterday, and you can read our interview by clicking here.
