Firefighters were summoned to help a drunk man who was worse for wear at 5am this morning (December 20) in the centre of Harrogate.

The last Friday before Christmas is known as Mad Friday because of the number of revellers it attracts.

The festive spirit was flowing in Harrogate and it all appeared to get too much for one unidentified man.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s overnight incident report said a crew from Harrogate Fire Station on Skipton Road was called to the entrance of the Winter Gardens at 5.07am.

The report added:

“Harrogate crew responded to a report of a male who had fallen down a grass embankment approximately six feet at the entrance to the Winter Gardens. Crew power and a nine-metre ladder used to bring an intoxicated uninjured male back to ground level safely.”

No other details were released.

North Yorkshire Police said yesterday it had a “robust and proactive plan in place” for Mad Friday that involved drafting extra officers in town and city centres.

The force said in a statement:

“Based on previous years we are expecting extra calls into our force control room this evening. On the Friday before Christmas last year we received over 300 999 calls which is nearly a 10% increase on a normal Friday in December.”
