Bob Nash, stalwart of Harrogate Hockey Club and former Harrogate Borough mayor, has died at the age of 92.

Mr Nash represented Harlow ward on Harrogate Town Council for 16 years before retiring from local politics in 2011.

Beyond the council chamber, he loved sport, playing badminton and tennis, and was made an honorary life member at Harlow Squash Club.

But his longest-lasting sporting passion was for hockey, and he was a member of Harrogate Hockey Club for 74 consecutive seasons.

According to his son, Gary, he was watching from the touchline as his granddaughter played just the week before he died.

In a Facebook post, Harrogate Hockey Club said that it had held a minute’s silence before Sunday’s match, and Gary and his children, Hannah and Andrew, were on the pitch “in a fitting tribute”.

It added:

The scoreboard was kept up to date through the game, an effort Bob frequently emphasised!

In a social media post, Gary wrote:

It is with a very heavy heart and great sadness that I am posting to let everyone know that my dad Bob Nash passed away on Friday night at the tender age of 92.

He had been well health-wise so it came as a shock to all that he passed away in his sleep.

He added:

The proudest dad and grandfather you could wish for.

The family will publish details of funeral arrangements once they have been confirmed.
