Harrogate Railway’s former chairman, Mick Edwards, has returned to the club until the end of the season.
Mr Edwards, who left the club in June last year, replaces his replacement, Rob Northfield.
As exclusively revealed by the Stray Ferret in January, Mr Northfield resigned from the club following a disagreement with committee members.
Mr Edwards had served as chairman since 2017 before Mr Northfield took over last year.
Speaking to the Stray Ferret yesterday (March 25), Harrogate Railway secretary Andy Young said:
Mick has never really been away from the club. We wanted to bring someone in with longstanding continuity and who’s vastly experienced with the club. Mick’s passionate about Harrogate Railway. He’s been associated with them all his life and he’s got them at heart.
Harrogate Railway are fourth in the NCEL Division One. They are in the third of four play-off spots with five games left to go.
But since Mr Northfield’s departure in January, the Station View side has had a turbulent time in the league.
Before the new year, The Rail had lost only one match; since January 1, they have lost six. Rob Youhill’s men have won fewer than they’ve lost since the turn of the year.
Mr Young hopes Mr Edwards’s appointment will steady the ship. He said:
He will bring stability. Everybody at the club knows who Mick Edwards is, and he commands respect from everyone. He gives us that leadership back again, which Rob [Northfield] had.
Mr Young said that the priority focus was on Railway’s remaining five league games as they aim to finish in the play-off places and push for promotion.
At the end of the season, the committee will then reassess its chairman dilemma.
