Gift card fraudster scams Harrogate company out of £4,000

A Harrogate retailer has lost around £4,000 at the hands of a gift card fraudster.
North Yorkshire Police today (February 24) issued an alert to all businesses across the county following the fraud incident and urged companies to be vigilant.
Police said a Harrogate retailer received a call from someone claiming to be from their IT department a few days ago.
The caller "manipulated the member of staff into activating gift cards" and passing on card details over the phone, which led to the company losing around £4,000.
Today’s statement added:
Our economic crime unit is warning all retailers to be vigilant, particularly when it comes to unsolicited calls relating to gift cards, or callers claiming to be from within the same company. Always consider checking a phone call is genuine by recontacting the caller via a recognised number.
