Hampsthwaite's village church has applied for an extension to its churchyard to provide space for the scattering of ashes.
St Thomas A Becket's Church, on Church Lane, has submitted a planning application to North Yorkshire Council.
The proposal would see the churchyard extended into a parcel of land measuring 500 square metres.
In its plans, the church said the land would be used solely for the scattering of ashes and not as a burial ground.
The proposals add:
The land will be used exclusively for the scattering of ashes. No burial plots of memorial structures are proposed. This use is quiet, respectful and compatible with both the existing churchyard and nearby residential properties.
The church added that the planned use would be a “valuable community benefit” and ensure “minimal environmental and visual impact”.
North Yorkshire Council will make a decision on the plan at a later date.
