A Harrogate man has been jailed for breaching a suspended sentence order which was imposed for dangerous driving.

Hari Barnes, 18, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Friday (August 29) where he confirmed spoke to confirm his name and date of birth.

Barnes, who appeared via video link from HMP Hull, was sentenced to a 40-week suspended prison sentence on June 27 after admitting dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance on the evening of December 3, 2024.

He was also ordered to wear an electronic tag and abide by a curfew between the hours of 7pm and 7am for 12 months.

Andrew Watson, a probation officer, told magistrates that Barnes breached his curfew between June 30 and July 5. He added that the defendant also breached the order between July 9 and July 14.

Mr Watson said Barnes had a “negative attitude" toward the probation service and was “unwilling to engage in any meaningful way” with the service.

He added that the 18-year-old attended three out of eight appointments with probation since the order was imposed.

Mr Watson requested magistrates activate Barnes’ suspended prison sentence.

Brian Nuttney, defending, told the court that Barnes had a “difficult upbringing from the start”.

He said:

Some of that is of his own making, but some is circumstantial. He has learning difficulties and he fell through the cracks. His father was a violent man and he witnessed extreme violence being delivered on others.

Mr Nuttney added that Barnes became “quite easy prey” for gangs and was exploited.

However, he said that he accepted that magistrates had “no practical option” and that their “hands were tied”.

Magistrates activated the suspended sentence in part and sentenced Barnes to 30 weeks in prison.
