Harrogate Tesco roadworks completion date delayed
Roadworks at Harrogate’s new Tesco site are expected to run until December and include five nights of full road closures.
Work began on Skipton Road to the west of New Park roundabout on August 18 to allow contractors to build a roundabout and access road for the new supermarket.
This included a one-way closure for the duration of the work, which was expected to be in place until late November.
However, the work is now expected to go on until December 4 and include five nights of road closures between the hours of 6.30pm and midnight.
Cllr Paul Haslam, who represents Bilton & Nidd Gorge, shared information on the roadworks from North Yorkshire Council officials on his Facebook page today (November 22).
It included that the road will be closed on the evenings of 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th of November and 3rd December on Skipton Road between Harewood Road and the roundabout with the A61.
However, access into the Harrogate Retail Park will still be provided.
The council added:
Unfortunately, the road works associated with the new Tesco on Skipton Road are now programmed to finish on the 4th of December and it is fully expected that the road to be open from this date.
It is recognised that the Harrogate Christmas Fayre commences from the 5th December, therefore this is a critical completion date. North Yorkshire Council officers are working with the applicant’s contractors to ensure the programme is as robust as possible, whilst also understanding the need to balance the disruption for the immediate residents and businesses in the vicinity.
The move comes as the roadworks have faced criticism from both residents and politicians.
In September, Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon claimed “serious mismanagement” of the roadworks were disturbing the lives of residents and businesses.
Meanwhile, Claire Lewis, owner of the Number One Shop on Electric Avenue, said she had been forced to forgo her salary in August due to declining footfall caused by the Tesco roadworks.
