Gemma Ackroyd, owner of The Cheeseboard

A well-known cheesemonger in Harrogate has moved… 29 doors down.

The Cheeseboard has occupied the same Commercial Street unit – number one – since the company was established in 1981.

Since then, it has had four different owners and Gemma Ackroyd, its current owner, has overseen it for the last 25 years.

But Ms Ackroyd felt it was time for a change and, when the lease on the original unit came up for renewal, she saw an opportunity.

Ms Ackroyd told the Stray Ferret:

The building was in a state of disrepair… but I didn’t want to leave Commercial Street. Then this [new unit] came up - it’s bigger and brighter.

The Cheeseboard has moved to 30 Commercial Street - the unit formerly occupied by Wave Aquariums, which closed in 2023.

Ms Ackroyd said after a quarter of a century, she “wanted to move forward”.

The original shop is now closed and The Cheeseboard’s new home officially opens today (January 12).

But Ms Ackroyd said operations will remain the same at the new site:

We have stayed in keeping with the old look of the shop. It’s a bit more modern but all the same feel. Operations will be the same.

Ms Ackroyd also plans to apply for an on-premises licence, meaning she would be able to serve alcohol at the shop, and create an outdoor seating area. If approved, wine and cheeseboards would be on offer at The Cheeseboard.

She told the Stray Ferret:

We have not gone and the reason we wanted to stay on Commercial Street is due to the community. But it’s business as normal – and there will be a bit more room [at the new shop]!

Not much has changed, really.

The Cheeseboard’s new shop will operate from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am until 5pm on Saturdays.
