David Lloyd has withdrawn plans to install an outdoor swimming pool at its Jennyfields site in Harrogate.
The gym and leisure club, on Oakdale Place, submitted proposals to North Yorkshire Council to convert its existing outdoor tennis courts.
The club said in planning documents that the move would bring “significant benefits for members’ fitness as well as mental wellbeing”.
It added that it had received “considerable requests” for an improvement to its outside facilities.
The application to the council said the pool would be built close to the existing building.
The existing terrace would then be extended to provide easier access and increased outdoor space for members.

However, the proposal was met with objections including a petition from residents on nearby Norwood Grove and Oakdale Glen.
Diane Andrews, who submitted the petition to the council, said:
The residents listed strongly object to the proposals being put forward in that it is obvious there will be a significant amount of noise, disruption and disturbance, not only in the development of the area from earthworks digging out the two areas but in the long term from members using the pools, especially the children’s pool.
Meanwhile, the council’s highways department requested more information from David Lloyd on parking provision and to confirm the ownership of the private road used to access the site.
According to documents submitted to the council, there would be no changes to the existing 184 parking spaces on site.
The Stray Ferret has approached David Lloyd to ask why it withdrew the plans and whether it intends to resubmit the proposals.
A spokesperson for the company said:
At David Lloyd Clubs we are committed to making a positive contribution in the communities and environment in which we operate. We work collaboratively with councils to ensure that our plans support the needs of our local communities as well as our members.
North Yorkshire Council requested additional information, and suggested that while this is being submitted, the planning application should be temporarily withdrawn.
